The connection between COVID-19 and DM unveils a multifaceted interplay that significantly impacts disease severity and management strategies. Initial studies reveal that people with DM had higher severity rates of COVID-19 due to the infection by SARS-CoV-2. The virus solely induces hyperglycemia and, at the same time, profoundly influences the immune and inflammatory reactions, increasing the rate of severe complications and death among diabetes patients.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a pivotal hormone that regulates serum calcium and phosphate and is closely associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). PTH can undergo oxidation at methionine 8 and methionine 18 of the molecule. This oxidation process leads to a lower binding affinity to the PTH receptor due to molecular refolding, particularly for PTH oxidized at methionine 8.

This study evaluated the effects of water-soluble fractions (WSF) of stranded oil sampled from the beaches of Trancoso and Massarandupió (Bahia, Brazil) following a mysterious oil spill along Brazil's northeast coast (2019-2020). The samples were characterized for aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and tested for chronic toxicity in the embryo-larval stages of the sea urchin Echinometra lucunter. The WSFs contained high levels of PAHs, some of which were above the acceptable levels for water in Brazil, and toxicity to sea urchin embryos tended to occur at higher concentrations.

Chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) syndrome is a rare central nervous system inflammatory disorder with an unknown pathophysiology. We present the case of a 51-year-old female exhibiting clinical and radiological features consistent with CLIPPERS syndrome. She manifested diplopia, vertigo, gait ataxia, and lower limb asthenia, accompanied by impaired tandem gait, right sixth nerve palsy, and coarse horizontal nystagmus during the physical examination.
