Background: Colistin, a last-resort antibiotic for treating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, has increased resistance as a result of the emergence of the gene. The 1gene, which confers colistin resistance, is often carried on plasmids, facilitating its spread by horizontal gene transfer among bacterial populations. The rising prevalence of 1mediated resistance poses significant challenges for infection control and treatment efficacy.

The First Report of -1-Carrying , Isolated from a Clinical Sample in the North-East of Romania.

Microorganisms

November 2024

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 16 Universitatii Street, 700115 Iași, Romania.

Colistin resistance poses a significant clinical challenge, particularly in Gram-negative bacteria. This study investigates the occurrence of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance among isolates (, , and spp.) and non-fermentative rods ( and ).

ESBL- and pAmpC-producing Enterobacterales from Swedish dogs and cats 2017-2021: a retrospective study.

Acta Vet Scand

January 2025

Department of Animal Health and Antibiotic Strategies, Swedish Veterinary Agency, Uppsala, Sweden.

Background: Antibiotic resistant bacteria are a threat to both human and animal health. Of special concern are resistance mechanisms that are transmissible between bacteria, such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and plasmid-mediated AmpC (pAmpC). ESBL/AmpC resistance is also of importance as it confers resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics including third generation cephalosporins.

Article Synopsis
  • Fluroquinolone resistance in Enterobacteriaceae, including Proteus, poses a significant public health threat, particularly affecting treatments for UTIs and intra-abdominal infections.
  • The study aimed to identify specific quinolone resistance genes in ciprofloxacin-resistant Proteus species within a defined timeframe and location in Bangladesh.
  • Results showed a high prevalence (64.58%) of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes among resistant isolates, indicating a concerning trend that could lead to increased resistance and transmission due to over-prescription of fluoroquinolones.

Carriage of antimicrobial resistance genes in Escherichia coli of bovine origin.

Pol J Vet Sci

December 2024

Department of Animal Nutrition and Husbandry, University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, Komenského 73, Košice, 04181, Slovakia.

The present study aimed to search for the presence of the plasmid-mediated antimicrobial resistance genes in 106 Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates from a total of 240 fresh fecal samples collected from 12 private cattle farms in Bingol province of East Turkey from November 2021 to January 2022. In those colistin-resistant E.
