Gametogenesis in Plasmodium gallinaceum involves bicarbonate-dependent processes and requires a continuous supply of glucose (presumably as an energy source). Emergence and exflagellation of gametocytes, in vitro, occur independently of the CO2 tension but are rigidly correlated with the pH of the external medium. In bicarbonate-saline gametogenesis is initiated only if the pH exceeds 7.7. Our results suggest that gamete development of malaria parasites is stimulated when infected blood is exposed to air because the decrease in the CO2 tension of the blood causes its pH to rise.

The judicious selection of ovulation inhibitors in ovarian stimulation protocols is crucial for the success of assisted reproductive technology (ART). Herein, we investigate the dose-dependent effects of chlormadinone acetate (CMA) and cetrorelix, two distinct ovulation inhibitors, on oocyte maturation in patients with normal ovarian reserve, using univariable and multivariable Poisson regression analyses. Patients undergoing progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) with CMA (n = 299) or gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist (GnRH-ant) with cetrorelix (n = 605) during their initial in vitro fertilization cycle were enrolled at our center from March 2018 to October 2020 (N = 904).

DNA methylation, catalyzed by DNA methyltransferases (DNMT), plays pivotal role in regulating embryonic development, gene expression, adaption to environmental stress, and maintaining genome integrity. DNMT family consists of DNMT1, DNMT3A, DNMT3B, and the enzymatically inactive DNMT3L. DNMT3A and DNMT3B establish novel methylation patterns maintained by DNMT1 during replication.

Recent studies support the influence of paternal lifestyle and diet before conception on the health of the offspring via epigenetic inheritance through sperm DNA methylation, histone modification, and small non-coding RNA (sncRNA) expression and regulation. Smoking may induce DNA hypermethylation in genes related to anti-oxidation and insulin resistance. Paternal diet and obesity are associated with greater risks of metabolic dysfunction in offspring via epigenetic alterations in the sperm.

Aflatoxins harm the reproductive system and gamete development in animals. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) in chickens, as ancestral cells of gametes, are essential for genetic transmission, yet the impact and mechanisms of aflatoxins on them remain elusive. This study systematically investigated the effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on chicken PGCs and their potential mechanisms using an in vitro culture model.

A successful mitosis-to-meiosis transition in germ cells is essential for fertility in sexually reproducing organisms. In mice and humans, it is established that expression of STRA8 is critical for meiotic onset in both sexes. Here we show that BMP signalling is also essential, not for STRA8 induction but for correct meiotic progression in female mouse fetal germ cells.
