Revisiting Virchow's triad: exploring the cellular and molecular alterations in cerebral venous congestion.

Cell Biosci

October 2024

Beijing Institute of Brain Disorders, Laboratory of Brain Disorders, Ministry of Science and Technology, Collaborative Innovation Center for Brain Disorders, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Big Data-Based Precision Medicine, Capital Medical University, Beijing, 100069, China.

Background: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare but serious condition that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Virchow's triad elucidates the role of blood hypercoagulability, blood flow dynamics, and endothelial damage in the pathogenesis of CVT. Cerebral venous congestion (CVC) increases the risk of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and can lead to recurrent episodes and residual symptoms.

Liver macrophages revisited: The expanding universe of versatile responses in a spatiotemporal context.

Hepatol Commun

July 2024

Department of Hepatology & Gastroenterology, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Campus Virchow-Klinikum and Campus Charité Mitte, Berlin, Germany.

The liver is a vital organ that continuously adapts to a wide and dynamic diversity of self-antigens and xenobiotics. This involves the active contribution of immune cells, particularly by the liver-resident macrophages, the Kupffer cells (KCs), which exert a variety of central functions in liver homeostasis and disease. As such, KCs interact with their microenvironment to shape the hepatic cellular landscape, control gut-derived signal integration, and modulate metabolism.

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is the third most common malignancy associated with Lynch syndrome (LS). The current European urology guidelines recommend screening for LS in patients with UTUC up to the age of 60 years. In this study, we examined a cohort of patients with UTUC for potential association with LS in order to establish the sensitivity of current guidelines in detecting LS.

Melanotic pigment in the thyroid is practically synonymous with chronic minocycline therapy and rare cases of melanotic medullary thyroid carcinoma. However, primary melanoma of the thyroid has not been reported yet. We report a rare case of a 25-year-old male with a locally aggressive thyroid mass and distant metastases at presentation.

Background: Only few studies of emergency department (ED) consulters include a longitudinal investigation. The EMACROSS study had surveyed 472 respiratory patients in eight inner-city EDs in Berlin in 2017/2018 for demographic, medical and consultation-related characteristics. This paper presents the results of a follow-up survey at a median of 95 days post-discharge.
