The structures are given for five paralytic acylpolyamines from the venom of the funnel web spider, Agelenopsis aperta. The acyl moieties are derived from (3-indolyl)acetic acid, (4-hydroxy-3-indolyl)acetic acid, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The polyamine portions of the toxins are novel. Three toxins (AG489, AG505, and AG452) contain 1, 5, 9, 13, 18, 22-hexaazadocosane which is unique as a natural polyamine because of its length and hydroxylation at the 5-aza position. The polyamine portions of two other alpha-agatoxins (AG488 and AG504) are unusual also, containing guanidinooxy moieties.

Cyanobacteria blooms were detected in 2017 and 2018 in Cayuga Lake, New York, with paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (PSPTs) the primary toxin detected. Analysis of these samples by HPLC with chemical oxidation, receptor binding assay, ELISA, and LC-MS/MS confirmed the presence of PSPTs but each method gave highly unusual results based on the theory establishing each method. The structures of the toxins could not be identified and may be 'unusual' or unelucidated PSPTs.

Prevalent interactions among marine phytoplankton triggered by long-range climatic stressors are well-known environmental disturbers of community structure. Dynamic response of phytoplankton physiology is likely to come from interspecies interactions rather than direct climatic effect on single species. However, studies on enigmatic interactions among interspecies, which are induced by bioactive extracellular compounds (BECs), especially between related harmful algae sharing similar shellfish toxins, are scarce.
