Silver amalgamated electrodes are a good substrate to determine lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in seawater because they have properties similar to mercury but without the free mercury (Hg). Here a silver amalgamated microwire (SAM) electrode is optimised for the determination of Pb and Cd in coastal waters and uncontaminated ocean waters. The SAM was vibrated during the deposition step to increase the sensitivity, and electroanalytical parameters were optimised. The Hg coating required plating from a relatively concentrated (millimolar) solution, much greater (500×) than used for instance to coat glassy carbon electrodes. However, the coating on the ex situ amalgamated electrode was found to be stable and could be used for up to a week to determine trace levels of Pb in seawater of natural pH. The limit of detection square-wave ASV (50 Hz) using the pre-plated SAM electrode was 8 pM Pb using a 1-min plating time at pH 4.5. The limit of detection in pH 2 seawater was 4 pM using a 5-min plating time, and it was 12 pM using a 10-min plating time at natural pH in the presence of air, using a square-wave frequency of 700 Hz. The vibrating SAM electrode was tested on the determination of Pb in reference seawater samples from the open Atlantic (at the 20 pM level), Pacific, and used for a study of Pb in samples collected over 24 h in Liverpool Bay (Irish Sea).

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed worldwide and is also among the most fatal. Early detection, before symptoms become evident, is fundamental for patients' survival. Therefore, several lung cancer biomarkers have been proposed to enable a prompt diagnosis, including neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA).

The high rate of cancer worldwide and the heavy costs imposed on governments and humanity have always motivated researchers to develop point-of-care (POC) biosensors for easy diagnosis and monitoring of cancer treatment. Herein, we report on a label-free impedimetric biosensor based on TiCT MXene and imprinted ortho-phenylenediamine (o-PD) for the detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a biomarker for various cancers surveillance, especially colorectal cancer (CRC). Accordingly, MXene was drop-casted on the surface of a disposable silver electrode to increase the sensitivity and create high-energy nanoareas on the surface, which are usable for protein immobilization and detection.

The photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) relies on effectively managing the interface between the hole extraction layer and the light-absorbing perovskite layer. In this study, we have synthesised (4-(3,6-bis(methylthio)-9H-carbazol-9-yl)butyl)phosphonic acid (MeS-4PACz), which forms a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode. The molecule's methylthio substituents generate a favourable interfacial dipole moment and interact with the perovskite layer.

The significant contact resistance at the metal-semiconductor interface is a well-documented issue for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) that hinders device and circuit performance. Here, this issue is tackled by developing three new thiol carbazole-based self-assembled monolayer (SAM) molecules, namely tBu-2SCz, 2SCz, and Br-2SCz, and utilizing them as carrier-selective injection interlayers. The SAMs alter the work function of gold electrodes by more than 1 eV, making them suitable for use in hole and electron-transporting OTFTs.

For the first time, a novel simple label-free electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated for sensitive detection of the coat protein of beet necrotic yellow vein virus (CP-BNYVV) as the causal agent of Rhizomania disease in sugar beet. To boost the amplification of the electrochemical signal, gold nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (AuNPs-rGO) nanocomposite was employed to modify the glassy carbon electrode. Anti-BNYVV polyclonal was immobilized onto a modified electrode by applying a thiol linker via a self-assembly monolayer (SAM) and activating the functionalized surface using (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane) and glutaraldehyde.
