Published: August 2013

Fluorescent ion sensors are quite valuable in experimental biology. The development of new sensor molecules requires determination of spectral properties (absorption bands, fluorescence excitation, and emission maxima) in order to characterize the type of optical response to the target ion. This optical response type and magnitude are used, in combination with solutions of buffered ion of precisely manipulated concentration, to determine the in vitro affinity for the target ion. Buffered aqueous ion solutions of appropriate pH and ionic strength are necessary to predict the performance of new sensors in biological applications. A series of novel benzoxazole-BAPTA calcium sensors, in addition to Rhod-3 (a new version of rhod-2), are described and their optical responses to calcium ion characterized.

Potato is cultivated all the year round in Pakistan. However, the major crop is the autumn crop which is planted in mid-October and contributes 80-85% of the total production. The abrupt climate change has affected the weather patterns all over the world, resulting in the reduction of the mean air temperature in autumn by almost 1.

Pursuing nanomaterials with high fluorescence quantum yields is of great significance in the fields of bioimaging, medical diagnosis, and food safety monitoring. This work reports on orange-emitting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) integrated with blue-emitting nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs), which enables highly sensitive detection of S and Zn ions through an off-on ratiometric fluorescence method. The highly emissive Cu NCs was doped by Ce with a high quantum yield of 51.

An imbalance in iron homeostasis contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction, which is closely linked to the pathogenesis of various diseases. Herein, we developed a nanosensor for detecting mitochondrial ferrous ions in vitro and in vivo. A poly(N-isopropylacrylamine)-coacrylic acid nanohydrogel was synthesized, and ferrous ions were detected using the fluorescent probe FeRhonox-1 embedded within it.

Constructing multifunctional phosphors grounded in the intricate relationship between energy level structures and luminescent properties has captivated researchers in the luminescent material field. Herein, using the embedded cluster multiconfigurational ab initio method, the energy levels of Bi in the SrLaGaO host at different geometries were calculated, which results in the establishment of complete configurational coordinate curves, yielding breathing mode vibrational frequencies and equilibrium bond lengths for all excited states. These curves supply deep insight into the luminescence properties of Bi-doped phosphors and highlight the impact of ions in the second coordination sphere on luminescence.

Nickel, an essential transition metal, plays a vital role in biological systems and industries. However, exposure to nickel can cause severe health issues, such as asthma, dermatitis, pneumonitis, neurological disorders, and cancers of the nasal cavity and lungs. Due to nickel's toxicity and extensive industrial use, efficient sensors for detecting Ni ions in environmental and biological contexts are essential.
