Published: April 2013

Recently carotid artery stenting (CAS) was upgraded in the class of recommendation among other revascularization treatments for symptomatic patients with carotid artery disease. This makes CAS potentially available to a broader range of patients. Significant evolution in CAS materials and protection devices contributed towards this improvement. Particularly in the setting of symptomatic carotid stenosis the most important cerebral protection devices available today, are the proximal protection systems. Comparing to the distal, filter-type protection devices, proximal protection systems can offer complete cerebral protection by preventing embolization of debris in the brain even before lesion crossing. In the present manuscript, we are reviewing all data regarding the efficacy of the flow-blockage proximal protection system (Mo.Ma®, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, US) as well as its potential advantages and drawbacks.

The impact of anions on electrooxidation of perfluoroalkyl acids by porous Magnéli phase titanium suboxide anodes.

Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Georgia, Griffin, Georgia, United States of America.

Previous studies have indicated the great performance of electrooxidation (EO) to mineralize per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water, but different anions presented in wastewater may affect the implementation of EO treatment in field applications. This study invetigated EO treatment of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), two representative perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), using porous Magnéli phase titanium suboxide anodes in electrolyte solutions with different anions present, including NO3-, SO42-, CO32- and PO43-. The experiment results indicate that CO32- enhanced PFAS degradation, while NO3- suppressed the degradation reactions with its concentration higher than 10 mM.

Disposable filtering face piece respirators (FFRs) are not approved for reuse as standard of care. However, lessons learnt from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, FFRs decontamination and reuse may be needed as crisis capacity strategy to ensure availability in medical facilities. We studied a decontamination methodology based on atmospheric pressure plasma technology, which allows for rapid, contact-free decontamination without utilisation of harmful chemicals, and suitable to access small pores and microscopic filters openings.

Purpose: To compare remineralisation efficacy between silver diamine fluoride (SDF) combined with potassium iodide (KI) and sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish using hydroxyapatite (HAP) artificial white spot lesions (AWSLs) demineralisation model.

Materials And Methods: A total of 25 HAP disks was randomly divided into five groups (n = 5): baseline, AWSLs, deionized water (DW), SDF-KI or F-varnish. After AWSLs were developed, the specimen was treated with either deionized water, SDF-KI or F-varnish.

Human keratinocytes grown at a gas-permeable interface in vitro stratify correctly to generate engineered human epidermis.

Background: One of the key functions of human skin is to provide a barrier, protecting the body from the surrounding environment and maintaining homeostasis of the internal environment. A mature, stratified epidermis is critical to achieve skin barrier function and is particularly important when producing skin grafts in vitro for wound treatment. For decades epidermal stratification has been achieved in vitro by culturing keratinocytes at an air-liquid interface, triggering proliferating basal keratinocytes to differentiate and form all epidermal layers.

Stoma surgery is frequently used to treat conditions such as colorectal cancer and inflammatory diseases. While it can extend patients' lives, it often introduces challenges that negatively affect quality of life. Convex skin barriers are commonly recommended for managing flat or retracted stomas and addressing irregular peristomal surfaces, such as creases or folds.
