The ability of 46 strains of Pseudomonas cepacia to inhibit phytopathogenic fungi and the effect of iron on their antifungal activity were studied. The antifungal effect of the bacteria and the antimicrobial activity of their crude yellow and violet pigments showed a 4-5-fold decrease in the presence of Fe(III). The addition of 100 micrograms/ml of FeCl3 to the medium decreased the biosynthesis of violet and yellow pigments; the complex of the yellow pigment with Fe(III) promoted the growth of the P. cepacia producing strain under iron-deficient conditions. The data obtained suggest a participation of some P. cepacia pigments in iron transport. The resistance of the P. cepacia strains to the synthetic chelating agents hydroxyethylenediphosphonic and diethylenediaminepentaacetic acids was demonstrated, which may indicate a high Fe(III)-binding constant of P. cepacia siderophores.

The ubiquitous presence, potential toxicity, and persistence of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) in the environment have raised significant concerns. In this study, we successfully isolate a novel microbial consortium, named 8-ZY, and we demonstrate its remarkable ability to degrade EHDPP using an extremely low concentration of the inoculate. A total of 11 degradation metabolites were identified, including hydrolysis, hydroxylated, methylated, glucuronide-conjugated, and previously unreported byproducts, enabling us to propose new transformation pathways.

The complex (BCC) is a group of Gram-negative bacteria that cause opportunistic infections, most notably in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), and have been associated with outbreaks caused by contaminated medical products. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is often used to guide treatment for BCC infections, perhaps most importantly in people with CF who are being considered for lung transplant. However, recent studies have highlighted problems with AST methods.

The development of efficient immobilization support for the enhancement of enzyme activity and recyclability is a highly desirable objective. Single-crystalline ordered macro-microporous ZIF-8 (SOM-ZIF-8), has emerged as a highly effective matrix for enzyme immobilization, however, the inherent hydrophobic nature limits its further advancement. Herein, we have customized the immobilization of the Pseudomonas cepacia lipase (LP) in the modification-channels of SOM-ZIF-8 by functionalizing the inner surface-properties with polyethylene glycol (PEG) (LP@SOM-ZIF-8-PEG), and significant enhancement of the activity and (thermal, solvent and cyclic) stability can be realized.

Patients with selective IgA deficiency could have various clinical presentations ranging from asymptomatic to severe respiratory or gastrointestinal tract infection, as well as autoimmune disease and allergic reactions. Selective IgA deficiency is relatively common in Caucasians, but it is rare in the Asian population, meaning it could be easily missed in the clinic. In this study, we report a 26-year-old man with a history of asthma and nephrotic syndrome.
