Rouleaux formation of washed erythrocytes was studied in 32 normal (HbAA) individuals and 30 sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) patients. Washed red cells were suspended in their plasma and rouleaux formation visualized with the aid of an inverted microscope connected to a video camera-monitor unit. Aggregation rate was studied by visual particle counting. Washed sickle discocytes showed rouleaux formation three times as high as normal cells. Red cells were also suspended in buffered Ringer solution containing dextran (a rouleaux inducer). Again, washed erythrocytes from sicklers were about 3 times more aggregable than normal cells at all pH values studied. Increased acidity appeared to aggravate rouleaux formation in both Hb genotypes. We also found plasma fibrinogen concentration in sicklers to be about twice as high as that of normals. High rouleaux formation in sicklers could be attributed not only to fibrinogen and other plasma factors but also to cellular factors.

We planned a series of experiments to investigate the possible role of spike protein of different SARS-CoV-2 variants in influencing erythrocyte biology. The values of erythrocyte count, hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MHC) did not vary across all samples challenged with both concentrations of the four different SARS-CoV-2 recombinant spike proteins. A significant increase in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was observed with the recombinant SARS-CoV-2 Alpha and Delta spike proteins at both 2 and 20 ng/mL final concentrations.

Findings include positive correlations between peptide propensities to aggregate and their binding to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins. Purpose: To describe the development and outcome of mid-phase pinpoint hyperfluorescent spots (MPHS) on fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) in acute (< 7-day symptom onset) central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) patients.
Methods: This retrospective study included acute CRAO patients who underwent multimodal imaging utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) and FFA between June 2017 and January 2023. The correlation of FFA images with the OCT images in various stages and severity of CRAO were studied.
