This review highlights some of our recent work on design and development of new synthetic methods for diverse classes of heterocycles employing novel organosulfur synthons i.e. polarized ketene dithioacetals, N, S-acetals, β-oxodithioesters and 2,3-(hetero)aryl-3-(methylthio)acrylonitriles, easily accessible from a wide range of active methylene compounds.

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is a chronic, multifactorial, and progressive neurodegenerative disease that associates with aging and is highly prevalent in our older population (≥65 years of age). This hypothesis generating this narrative review will examine the important role for the use of sodium thiosulfate (STS) as a possible multi-targeting treatment option for LOAD. Sulfur is widely available in our environment and is responsible for forming organosulfur compounds that are known to be associated with a wide range of biological activities in the brain.

Isothiocyanates (ITCs), found in edible plants such as cruciferous vegetables, are a group of reactive organo-sulfur phytochemicals produced by the hydrolysis of precursors known as glucosinolates. ITCs have been studied extensively both in vivo and in vitro to define their therapeutic potential for the treatment of chronic health conditions. Therapeutically, they have shown an intrinsic ability to inhibit oxidative and inflammatory phenotypes to support enhanced health.

Triple-negative breast cancer is a characteristic subtype of breast cancer that lacks the estrogen receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, and progesterone receptor. Because of its highly diverse subtypes, increased metastasis capability, and poor prognosis, the risk of mortality for people with triple-negative breast cancers is high as compared with other cancers. Chemotherapy is currently playing a major role in treating triple-negative breast cancer patients; however, poor prognosis due to drug resistance is causing serious concern.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are important epigenetic regulators of gene expression and various cellular processes, and are potential targets for anticancer therapy. In particular, HDAC8 is a promising therapeutic target for childhood neuroblastoma. To date, five HDAC inhibitors have been approved as anticancer drugs; however, all are non-selective HDAC inhibitors with various side effects.
