A simple all-optical power equalization scheme based on a single two-section reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is presented. Double optical path and non-uniform injection current density in the two sections easily saturate the RSOA and suppress pattern effect, thereby significantly reducing packet-to-packet power fluctuation while maintaining better signal quality. The mechanism of the two-section RSOA-based power equalizer is investigated and it is indicated that the two-section RSOA biased at proper current density functions as three cascaded SOAs, including a preamplifying SOA, a gain-saturated SOA and a third SOA. The performance dependence on driven current and structural parameters is also studied.

We integrate monolayer TMDCs into silicon-on-insulation (SOI) waveguides and dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton (DLSPP) waveguides to enhance nonlinear parameters (γ) of silicon-based waveguides. By optimizing the waveguide geometry, we have achieved significantly improved γ. In MoSe-on-SOI and MoSe-in-DLSPP waveguide with optimized geometry, the maximum γ at the excitonic resonant peak (λ) is 5001.

Given that non-equilibrium molecular motion in thermal gradients is influenced by both solute and solvent, the application of spectroscopic methods that probe each component in a binary mixture can provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of thermal diffusion for a large class of systems. In the present work, we use an all-optical setup whereby near-infrared excitation of the solvent leads to a steady-state thermal gradient in solution, followed by characterization of the non-equilibrium system with electronic spectroscopy, imaging, and intensity. Using rhodamine B in water as a case study, we perform measurements as a function of solute concentration, temperature, wavelength, time, near-infrared laser power, visible excitation wavelength, and isotope effect.

Diffractive Neural Networks (DNNs) leverage the power of light to enhance computational performance in machine learning, offering a pathway to high-speed, low-energy, and large-scale neural information processing. However, most existing DNN architectures are optimized for single tasks and thus lack the flexibility required for the simultaneous execution of multiple tasks within a unified artificial intelligence platform. In this work, we utilize the polarization and wavelength degrees of freedom of light to achieve optical multi-task identification using the MNIST, FMNIST, and KMNIST datasets.

Optical logic gates based on nonlinear optical property of material with ultrafast response speed and excellent computational processing power can break the performance bottleneck of electronic transistors. As one of the layered 2D materials, TaNiS exhibits high anisotropic mobility, exotic electrical response, and intriguing optical properties. Due to the low-symmetrical crystal structures, it possesses in-plane anisotropic physical properties.

Optical logic operation is promising for ultrafast information processing and optical computing due to the high computation speed and low power consumption. However, conventional optical logic devices require either a complex structure and circuit design or a constant voltage supply, which impedes the development of high-density integrated circuits. Here, all-optical logic devices are designed using a self-powered polarization-sensitive photodiode of the GeSe homojunction, which is attributed to an anisotropic band structure and built-in electric field.
