The effect of the addition of lactoferrin on Staphylococcus aureus to Minas frescal cheese was evaluated. Three cheeses were made: control (S. aureus), Lf-2% (2% lactoferrin + S. aureus) and Lf-4% (4% lactoferrin + S. aureus). Cheeses were packaged and S. aureus populations were determined on days 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 of storage at 6 degrees C. The experiment was repeated three times. S. aureus population increased 1.3 logarithmic cycles in the control cheese during storage, while it decreased to numbers below the detection limit in cheeses containing lactoferrin, over the same period. Moreover, antimicrobial effect showed to be dose-dependent.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) infections result in significant economic losses and reduced animal welfare. Historically, antibiotics and vaccinations currently control APEC infections in poultry, however, antibiotic-resistant strains and heterologous serotypes limit their effectiveness. Meanwhile, antibiotic-resistant strains can be transmitted to humans via contact with animals, food or their environment.

Recently, several antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), varying in length from 12 to 37 residues, have been shown to act as antibiofilm agents. Here, we report a study of 23 hexapeptides modeled after four different Trp- and Arg-rich AMPs, including the RRWQWR-NH peptide, derived from bovine lactoferrin. They were tested against the pathogenic Gram-negative PAO1 strain and a Gram-positive MRSA strain.

Wound infections caused by often result in localized suppurative lesions that severely impede the healing process, so it is urgent to develop a dress with efficient antimicrobial and pro-healing functions. In this study, the bifunctional injectable hydrogel lactoferrin (Lf)/NZ2114/lithium magnesium silicate hydrogel (LMSH) was first successfully prepared through the electrostatic interaction method. The physical, biological, and efficacy properties are systematically analyzed with good shear-thinning capacity and biocompatibility.
