The biogenesis of a functional microRNA is largely dependent on the secondary structure of the microRNA precursor (pre-miRNA). Recently, it has been shown that microRNAs are present in the genome as the form of polycistronic transcriptional units in plants and animals. It will be important to design efficient computational methods to predict such structures for microRNA discovery and its applications in gene silencing. In this paper, we propose a parallel algorithm based on the master-slave architecture to predict the secondary structure from an input sequence. We conducted some experiments to verify the effectiveness of our parallel algorithm. The experimental results show that our algorithm is able to produce the optimal secondary structure of polycistronic microRNAs.

The kidney plays an important role in iron homeostasis and mesangial cells (MCs) are phagocytic cells important for glomerular homeostasis. Sickle hemoglobin (HbS) modulators are promising clinical candidates for treatment of sickle cell disease. Although they prevent disease pathophysiology of HbS polymerization and red blood cell (RBC) sickling by increasing hemoglobin oxygen affinity, higher oxygen affinity can also cause transient tissue hypoxia with compensatory increases in erythropoiesis and subsequent increases in RBC turnover.

According to the fluorescence internal filtering effect (IFE), the more the absorption spectrum of the quencher overlaps with the excitation and emission spectra of the fluorescent substance, the better the quenching effect and, correspondingly, the more significant and sensitive the contrast becomes when the fluorescence is turned on. Thus, in the competitive fluorescence-quenching lateral flow immunoassays (FQ-LFIAs), the fluorescence quencher with an outstanding optical property is of great importance. Herein, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and polydopamine (PDA) coengineered covalent organic frameworks (COF/Au@PDA) were synthesized as a fluorescence quencher to increase spectral overlap.

The intrauterine device (IUD) is an important and highly effective means of contraception. Migration of the IUD, post implantation, out of the uterus is an infrequent complication, and its subsequent migration into the urinary bladder with formation of secondary bladder calculi, is even more infrequently reported. The authors report a 51 year old woman who had had her last child delivered via cesarean section 16 years ago.

Refractance window drying is an emerging technology that allows the development of new dried foods with an acceptable shelf life from products widely consumed in the world with high nutritional content and health benefits, such as Dairy products. The present study aimed to determine the effect of temperature and product thickness during Refractance window drying in a laboratory scale dryer on the physicochemical properties of whole bovine milk and commercial flavored yogurt, using an optimal design model. The drying temperature range was between 40°C and 80°C, while the evaluated thickness ranged from 1 to 3 mm.

This review presents the current understanding of (i) spontaneous self-organization of spatial structures of protein molecules, and (ii) possible ways of chaperones' assistance to this process. Specifically, we overview the most important features of spontaneous folding of proteins (mostly, of the single-domain water-soluble globular proteins): the choice of the unique protein structure among zillions of alternatives, the nucleation of the folding process, and phase transitions within protein molecules. We consider the main experimental facts on protein folding, both in vivo and in vitro, of both kinetic and thermodynamic nature.
