Various mechanical disintegration conditions in water were applied to 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose to prepare TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) of uniform widths ∼4 nm but with three different average lengths, 200, 680, and 1100 nm. The viscosity average degrees of polymerization of the TOCNs were 250, 350, and 400, respectively. Self-standing TOCN and TOCN-coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films were prepared, and the optical, mechanical and gas-barrier properties of the films were evaluated in terms of nanofibril length. Only small differences in density, water content, and elastic modulus of the films were observed but TOCN films prepared from longer nanofibrils clearly showed higher tensile strengths, elongations at break and crystallinity indices. The oxygen barrier properties of the TOCN-coated PET and PLA films increased with increasing nanofibril length. In contrast, nanofibril length had almost no influence on water vapor-barrier properties.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are advanced biomaterials valued for their strength, lightweight nature, and low thermal expansion, making them suitable for diverse industrial applications. However, their potential inhalation risks necessitate thorough safety evaluations. This study investigates the pulmonary inflammatory effects and retention of CNFs following intratracheal instillation in rats.

The full exploitation of the outstanding mechanical properties of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as potential reinforcements in nanocomposite materials is limited by the poor interactions at the CNF-polymer matrix interface. Within this work, tailor-made copolymers were designed to mediate the interface between CNFs and biodegradable poly(butylene adipate--terephthalate) (PBAT), and their effect on extruded nanocomposite performance was tested. For this purpose, two well-defined amphiphilic anchor-tail diblock copolymer structures were compared, with a fixed anchor block length and a large difference in the hydrophobic tail block length.

Superinsulating nanofibrillar cellulose foams have the potential to replace fossil-based insulating materials, but the development is hampered by the moisture-dependent heat transport and the lack of direct measurements of phonon transport. Here, inelastic neutron scattering is used together with wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and small angle neutron scattering to relate the moisture-dependent structural modifications to the vibrational dynamics and phonon transport and scattering of cellulose nanofibrils from wood and tunicate, and wood cellulose nanocrystals (W-CNC). The moisture interacted primarily with the disordered regions in nanocellulose, and WAXS showed that the crystallinity and coherence length increased as the moisture content increased.

Cellulose is the world's most abundant natural polymer and it can be used as a substitute for fossil derived products. The work described here evaluated the use of mono-component enzyme treatment, using endoglucanase (EG) and lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO), to improve the properties of micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) produced from mechanically refined kraft pulp. Endoglucanase treatment of the pulp significantly reduced the degree of polymerization (DP) of the cellulose by promoting fiber cutting.
