Background: Immunoglobulin A is the most abundant isotype in secretions from mucosal surfaces of the gastrointestinal, respiratory and genitourinary tracts and in external secretions such as colostrum, breast milk, tears and saliva. The high concentration of human secretory IgA (hsIgA) in human colostrum strongly suggests that it should play an important role in the passive immune protection against gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.

Materials And Methods: Human secretory IgA was purified from colostrum. The reactivity of hsIgA against mycobacterial antigens and its protective capacity against mycobacterial infection was evaluated.

Results: The passive administration of hsIgA reduces the pneumonic area before challenge with M. tuberculosis. The intratracheal administration of M. tuberculosis preincubated with hsIgA to mice greatly reduced the bacterial load in the lungs and diminished lung tissue injury.

Conclusions: HsIgA purified from colostrum protects against M. tuberculosis infection in an experimental mouse model.

Conventional techniques for evaluating hydration status include the analysis of blood, urine, and body weight. Recently, advancements in dentistry have introduced capacitance sensor-based oral epithelial moisture meters as promising avenues for assessment. This study aimed to examine the correlation between oral mucosal moisture content, as determined using a capacitance sensor, and exercise-induced dehydration.

Effects of dam fear and stress on metrics of puppy welfare in commercial breeding kennels.

Sci Rep

Center for Animal Welfare Science, Departments of Comparative Pathobiology and Animal Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, 47907, USA.

It is well established that maternal factors can affect the abilities of offspring to cope with stressors and can influence their overall welfare states. However, maternal effects have not been extensively explored in US commercial breeding kennels (CBKs). Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify if fear and stress in dams affected puppy welfare metrics in CBKs.

Breast milk delivery of an engineered dimeric IgA protects neonates against rotavirus.

Weill Cornell Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Disease, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Dimeric IgA (dIgA) is the dominant antibody in many mucosal tissues. It is actively transported onto mucosal surfaces as secretory IgA (sIgA) which plays an integral role in protection against enteric pathogens, particularly in young children. Therapeutic strategies that deliver engineered, potently neutralizing antibodies directly into the infant intestine through breast milk could provide enhanced antimicrobial protection for neonates.

Objectives: To investigate the occurrence and dynamics of secretory component-containing antibodies towards citrullinated proteins (SC ACPA) in plasma from pre-symptomatic individuals subsequently developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: We studied 319 individuals who had donated plasma prior to RA onset (median predating time 4.7 years), whereof 181 also donated samples after diagnosis.
