Many common diseases affecting the airways are characterized by airway inflammation. The measurement of this inflammation has a significant role in the management of these diseases. Quantitative sputum cell counts provide a measurement of the type and severity of inflammation present. Sputum cell counts are used in routine clinical practice in some centres but their use is not widespread. The present study used a standardized questionnaire to determine both patients' and physicians' attitudes toward the use of sputum cell counts. The use of sputum cell counts was well accepted by patients and physicians. Ninety per cent of patients were satisfied with the test. Sixty per cent of family physicians were satisfied with the test and 80% were in favour of it being funded by the government. The authors recommend more widespread use of sputum cell counts to guide the management of airway diseases.

Growing evidences have suggested the airway microbiota may participate in lung cancer progression. However, little was known about the relationship between airway microbiota and lung cancer associated systemic inflammation. Here we aimed to explore the association between sputum microbiota and systemic inflammation in lung cancer.

Background And Aims: The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) remains unclear. To investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with ACLF complicated with COVID-19 in order to provide evidence for the precise treatment of this patient population.
Methods: A total of 34 ACLF patients with COVID-19 admitted to these three hospitals from December 2022 to August 2023 were included as the ACLF+COVID-19 group.
Although granulomatous interstitial nephritis (GIN) is a rare histological finding in kidney transplants, the joint occurrence of GIN and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) has not, to our knowledge, been reported in the literature. We report a case of GIN and de novo FSGS in kidney transplant recipients leading to allograft failure. A 69-year-old male with a history of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) of unknown etiology, as well as liver failure from hepatitis B and C co-infection, initially had a living unrelated kidney transplant (LURT) in 2007 and subsequently received both liver and kidney transplants (SLKTs) in 2017.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations are major contributors to morbidity and mortality, highlighting the need to better understand their molecular mechanisms to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This study investigated differential gene expression profiles and key biological processes in COPD exacerbations categorized based on sputum microbiome profiling. An observational study was performed on a cohort of 16 COPD patients, who provided blood and sputum samples during exacerbations, along with five stable-state samples as controls.
