This paper describes the development of a normal-phase liquid chromatography ultraviolet-diode array detection method for the simultaneous quantification of parthenin and coronopilin in the leaves and flowers of Parthenium hysterophorous. The compounds were analyzed on a Merck Si60 silica column (5 µm, 250 × 4 mm) using an isocratic 15:85 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and hexane. The calibration curves resulting from the reference compounds in the concentration range of 200-2,000 ng exhibited acceptable linearity (r > 0.999). The method was developed to study the levels of parthenin and coronopilin in the leaves and flowers of P. hysterophorous collected during different seasons, and the method was validated by analyzing the spiked samples.

Plant pollens are strong airborne elicitors of asthma. Their proteinaceous allergens have been studied intensively, but little is known about a possible contribution of pollen secondary metabolites to the nonallergic exacerbation of asthma. Pollen samples originating from 30 plant species were analyzed by HPLC coupled to PDA, ESIMS, and ELSD detectors and off-line NMR spectroscopy.

A series of 1,2,3-triazole coronopilin congeners have been designed and synthesized by employing click chemistry approach starting from parthenin and evaluated for their cytotoxicity against a panel of six human cancer cell lines (PC-3, THP-1, HCT-15, HeLa, A-549 and MCF-7). While many compounds exhibited significant anticancer activity, compound 3a, was found to be the most promising analogue in this series with IC50 values of 3.1 μM on PC-3 cell line.

A new highly oxygenated pseudoguaianolide, 8-beta-acetoxyhysterone C, along with the known compounds, parthenin, coronopilin and hysterone C, has been isolated from a collection of the flowers of Parthenium hysterophorus. The structure of the new compound was derived from the extensive studies of its spectral (mainly 1D and 2D NMR) data.

Chemical investigation on the flowers of Parthenium hysterophorus has resulted in the isolation of four new pseudoguaianolides, hysterones A-D along with the known compounds, parthenin, coronopilin, 2beta-hydroxycoronopilin and tetraneurin-A. The structures of the new compounds were established by interpretation of their spectral (1D and 2D NMR) data. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of hysterones A and C was also carried out.
