A symphyseal mandibular facial cleft (Tessier 30) is a rare congenital abnormality. Nonunion of bone in the symphysis of the mandible, median cleft of the lower lip and tongue adherence in the midline to the floor of the mouth are the principle features of the anomaly. A satisfactory result can be achieved with early surgical correction of both hard and soft tissue defects in the age of 6 months. More than 3 years follow-up shows total bony fusion of the symphysis and normal lower lip function. There were only left deciduous central incisor and the ipsilateral tooth bud of the permanent central incisor missing.

Symphyseal fractures of the mandible with concomitant bilateral condylar fractures can often be a particularly challenging fracture pattern for the facial surgeon. Improper reduction of these fractures may lead to facial widening that proves difficult to correct secondarily. Here the authors describe a method to prevent this unwanted facial widening with the use of an orthopedic periarticular reduction clamp.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of single implants in the symphyseal and parasymphyseal regions with that of two implants in complete mandibular overdentures.
Patients And Methods: Fifteen completely edentulous male patients (50-65 years) were chosen and randomly grouped into three equal groups (five patients in each) according to the position and number of the received implants to assist mandibular complete overdentures: group I: single median implant; group II: single parasymphyseal implant; and group III: two implants were inserted in the canine area bilaterally. After three months of osseointegration, the lower denture was transformed into an implant-assisted complete mandibular overdenture.
