The cost of perspective switching: Constraints on simultaneous activation.

Psychon Bull Rev

January 2025

Department of Education and Psychology, The Open University, 1 University Road, P.O. Box 808, 4353701, Ra'anana, Israel.

Visual perspective taking often involves transitioning between perspectives, yet the cognitive mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. The current study draws on insights from task- and language-switching research to address this gap. In Experiment 1, 79 participants judged the perspective of an avatar positioned in various locations, observing either the rectangular or the square side of a rectangular cube hanging from the ceiling.

Acoustic waves provide an effective method for object manipulation in microfluidics, often requiring high-frequency ultrasound in the megahertz range when directly handling microsized objects, which can be costly. Micro-air-bubbles in water offer a solution toward low-cost technologies using low-frequency acoustic waves. Owing to their high compressibility and low elastic modulus, these bubbles can exhibit significant expansion and contraction in response to even kilohertz acoustic waves, leading to resonances with frequencies determined and tuned by air-bubble size.

What Can Genome Sequence Data Reveal About Population Viability?

Mol Ecol

December 2024

Department of Biology, Graduate Degree Program in Ecology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.

Biologists have long sought to understand the impacts of deleterious genetic variation on fitness and population viability. However, our understanding of these effects in the wild is incomplete, in part due to the rarity of sufficient genetic and demographic data needed to measure their impact. The genomics revolution is promising a potential solution by predicting the effects of deleterious genetic variants (genetic load) bioinformatically from genome sequences alone bypassing the need for costly demographic data.

Total Knee Replacements (TKRs) are a commonly used treatment to help patients suffering from severely damaged knee joints, which is normally brought on by osteoarthritis. The aim of the surgery is to reduce pain and regain function of the joint, however, some of these implants fail prematurely with implant wear being one of the main factors of failure. Computational analysis is an efficient tool that can provide an in-depth insight on the evolution of wear, before utilising experimental techniques which are time-consuming and costly.

Control when confidence is costly.

ArXiv

October 2024

Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, Rice University, Houston, TX 77005.

We develop a version of stochastic control that accounts for computational costs of inference. Past studies identified efficient coding without control, or efficient control that neglects the cost of synthesizing information. Here we combine these concepts into a framework where agents rationally approximate inference for efficient control.
