Background: The deferral of men who have sex with men (MSM) from blood donation is controversial worldwide, with national policies varying from no explicit deferral to permanent deferral. This study assesses whether MSM have donated and would be interested in donating if the US exclusion policy were removed and who would be eligible to donate if the policy were modified to a temporary or lower-risk deferral criterion.

Study Design And Methods: Questions about previous blood donation and interest in future donation were added to the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance survey questionnaire, which periodically gathers risk behavior information from MSM in San Francisco.

Results: Overall, 77.3% of 475 MSM respondents expressed interest in donating. By lower-risk criteria, 10.1% had no sexual contact in the past 6 months (2.3% in the past 12 months) and 1.9% had only lower-risk sexual contact in the past 6 months (1.5% in the past 12 months). Of the 23.4% who answered yes to having donated in the past, at least 25.2% did not comply with the current deferral of no male-male sex since 1977.

Conclusion: The majority of MSM are interested in donating blood. Depending on how the policy would be changed (i.e., either a temporary or a behavior-based deferral criterion), substantial numbers of MSM would be eligible.

Transfusion Medicine, Saveetha Medical College and Hospitals, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, IND.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood donation is crucial for saving lives, especially in emergencies, but many patients, particularly in developing countries, face challenges accessing safe blood due to infrastructure issues and low donor rates driven by cultural beliefs and misconceptions.
  • The study aims to evaluate the patterns and causes of blood donor deferrals at a tertiary care hospital over a 36-month period, focusing on identifying the incidence and reasons behind these deferrals.
  • Using a cross-sectional retrospective approach, the research analyzes donor demographics, deferral rates among genders, and employs statistical methods to explore potential relationships between gender and deferral rates.

Background: When employing the transcription-mediated amplification method for screening blood donors, there are some non-discriminatory reactive results which are screening assay reactive but HBV-DNA discriminatory assay negative. This raises concerns regarding the possibility of false positives among donors, which may lead to permanent deferral of blood donors and affect blood supply. This study aimed to elucidate the infection status of these non-discriminatory reactive blood donors and develop and validate a model to predict individualized hepatitis B status to establish an optimal screening strategy.

A deferral takes place when donors fail to meet the eligibility criteria for donating blood during their visit to a blood collection site. Deferral periods, which can be either permanent or temporary, are implemented to protect the well-being of both the donor and the recipient. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of deferrals and the various factors contributing to them.
