The acquisition of Boolean concepts.

Published: March 2013

Boolean relations, such as and, or, and not, are a fundamental way to create new concepts out of old. Classic psychological studies showed that such concepts differed in how difficult they were to learn, but did not explain the source of these differences. Recent theories have reinvigorated the field with explanations ranging from the complexity of minimal descriptions of a concept to the relative invariance of its different instances. We review these theories and argue that the simplest explanation - the number of mental models required to represent a concept - provides a powerful account. However, no existing theory explains the process in full, such as how individuals spontaneously describe concepts.

A Boolean model explains phenotypic plasticity changes underlying hepatic cancer stem cells emergence.

NPJ Syst Biol Appl

September 2024

Instituto de Ecología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México, México.

In several carcinomas, including hepatocellular carcinoma, it has been demonstrated that cancer stem cells (CSCs) have enhanced invasiveness and therapy resistance compared to differentiated cancer cells. Mathematical-computational tools could be valuable for integrating experimental results and understanding the phenotypic plasticity mechanisms for CSCs emergence. Based on the literature review, we constructed a Boolean model that recovers eight stable states (attractors) corresponding to the gene expression profile of hepatocytes and mesenchymal cells in senescent, quiescent, proliferative, and stem-like states.

Currently, there remain unresolved issues in the treatment of alveolar clefts, the resolution of which could greatly benefit many patients with cleft lip and palate. In alveolar cleft treatment research, a reliable tool for pre- and postoperative assessment is crucial. This study presents a concise and accurate method for postoperative evaluations of alveolar treatment, which can rapidly and accurately obtain the shape and volume of the newly formed bone.

Hand eczema: a review of clinical, dermoscopic and histological features.

Ital J Dermatol Venerol

October 2024

Department of Medical Sciences, Clinic of Dermatology, University of Turin, Turin, Italy -

Article Synopsis
  • Hand eczema (HE) is a common skin condition affecting 15-20% of people, with women having a higher prevalence; it presents with symptoms like itchy, red, swollen plaques, and blisters.
  • A literature search using terms related to HE was conducted across various medical databases to gather and evaluate existing research, guided by the PRISMA algorithm for screening relevant articles up to October 2023.
  • HE is often linked with atopic dermatitis and includes subtypes like irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, making it a challenging condition to manage; the paper aims to create a detailed classification system using clinical observations, dermoscopy, and histological data, highlighting its impact on daily life and the workplace.

High-Throughput Single-Molecule Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Profiling of Single-Amino Acid Substitutions in Peptides by a Gold Plasmonic Nanopore.

ACS Nano

State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China.

Simultaneous detection and structural characterization of protein variants on a single platform are highly desirable but technically challenging. Herein, we present a single-molecule spectral system based on a gold plasmonic nanopore for analyzing two peptides and their single-point mutated variants. The gold plasmonic nanopore enabled the high-throughput acquisition of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra at the single-molecule level by electrically driving analytes into hot spots.
