The prevalence of hemotropic mycoplasmas in wild rodents is largely unknown. Here, we report the presence of hemoplasmas in blood samples collected from brown sewer rats (Rattus norvegicus) trapped during rodent control around an animal hospital in Morioka, Japan. We examined nine rats using real-time PCR and end-point PCR, and found one rat (11.1%) that was positive for a hemoplasma infection. The 16S rRNA gene and 16S to 23S rRNA intergenic spacer region of the hemoplasma detected in a wild-caught rat were amplified using PCR. The nucleotide sequences of the PCR products were further determined and compared to those of other hemoplasmas. Our examinations revealed the presence of a hemoplasma that has not previously been described in rodents. The pathogenic traits of this hemoplasma remain unexplored.

Unlabelled: Bacterial pathogens remain poorly characterized in bats, especially in North America. We describe novel (and in some cases panmictic) hemoplasmas (10.1% positivity) and bartonellae (25.

Hemotropic mycoplasmas are unculturable bacteria that infect the surface of red blood cells of several mammalian species including cattle. The importance of hemoplasmas in cattle remains unclear and limited information is available about biological routes of transmission. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of transplacental transmission of hemoplasmas and to determine if colostrum of infected cows contained DNA from hemoplasma organisms.

Hemoplasmas (HM) infect a wide range of mammals and may cause hemolytic anemia. We detected HM in a melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra) stranded in Veracruz, Mexico. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of 16S and 23S rDNA indicated the presence of a HM that was previously detected in cetaceans from South America.

Arthropod vectors play a crucial role in the transmission of hemotropic mycoplasmas, small bacteria that infect red blood cells in a wide range of animals and humans globally, leading to intravascular infections. Traditional Giemsa-stained thin blood smears, used for diagnosing hemotropic mycoplasmas through microscopic examination, have low sensitivity and are effective only when bacteremia levels are high. This study aimed to employ molecular methods to detect and genetically characterize hemotropic mycoplasmas in goats as well as investigate the potential role of fleas as vectors.
