Dietary fiber has well-established beneficial effects on laxation. Many fibers have been developed with positive sensory properties and 2 such fibers are polydextrose (PDX) and soluble corn fiber (SCF), which can be added to many commercially produced products. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study comparing the laxative effects of PDX and SCF at a dose of 20 g/d with a low fiber control (LFC) eaten daily as a muffin and cereal in 36 healthy men and women. Each treatment period was 10 d with a 2-wk washout period between. Participants collected fecal samples during the last 5 d of each treatment and completed food diaries and gastrointestinal tolerance questionnaires on d 1, 2, and 10 of each treatment period. Five-day fecal wet weight was higher after the PDX and SCF treatments than the LFC treatment (P ≤ 0.0007). The number of stools per day and daily fecal output also were significantly greater during the PDX treatment compared with the LFC treatment. The whole gut transit time did not differ among treatments. The PDX treatment resulted in a softer stool (P = 0.002) than the SCF and LFC treatments. Fecal pH was lowered by the PDX treatment (P = 0.02), whereas SCF tended to lower it compared with the LFC treatment (P = 0.07). When the participants consumed PDX and SCF, they reported significantly more flatulence and borborygmi compared with when they consumed the LFC. Consumption of PDX and SCF at a dose of 20 g/d results in a mild laxative effect with nominal gastrointestinal tolerance issues.

Objective: The correlation between cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) progression and bile is rarely studied. Here, we aimed to identify differential metabolites in benign and malignant bile ducts and elucidate the generation, function and degradation of bile metabolites.
Design: Differential metabolites in the bile from CCA and benign biliary stenosis were identified by metabonomics.

Background: Enhanced de novo lipogenesis is essential for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Abnormally high cullin-associated and neddylation-dissociated 1 (CAND1) expression is associated with poor clinical prognosis in HCC. The SKP1-Cullin-1-F-box (SCF) complex consists of the SKP1, Cullin-1 and F-box proteins (FBPs) and performs multiple functions including adipogenesis.

Over the past few decades, there has been growing interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer pathogenesis and progression, as it is still associated with high morbidity and mortality. Current management of large bone sarcomas typically includes the complex therapeutic approach of limb salvage or sacrifice combined with pre- and postoperative multidrug chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, and is still associated with high recurrence rates. The development of cellular strategies against specific characteristics of tumour cells appears to be promising, as they can target cancer cells selectively.

Carboxylic acid-functionalized Pd and Pt PNP pincer complexes were used for the assembly of two porous Zr metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), 2-PdX and 2-PtX. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the new MOFs adopt cubic framework structures similar to the previously reported ZrO(OH)[(PCP)PdX], [PCP = 2,6-(OPAr)CH); Ar = p-CHCO, X = Cl, I] (1-PdX). Elemental analysis and spectroscopic characterization indicate the presence of missing linker defects, and 2-PdX and 2-PtX were formulated as ZrO(OH)(OAc)[M(PNP)X] [M = Pd, Pt; PNP = 2,6-(HNPAr)CHN; Ar = p-CHCO; X = Cl, I].

Fluorinated 4-aryl phenylalanine amino acid derivatives (aryl=2-C NF , 4-C H SF , 2-C H SCF , C F ) were obtained in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of phenylalanine precursors with highly fluorinated aryl boronic acid and esters in the presence of CsF. Pd complexes that possessed phenyl alanine derived ligands, such as trans-[PdBr{4-C H CH CH{NHC(O)CH }CO Et}(PiPr ) ], were used as catalysts. Stoichiometric model reactions indicate the intermediate generation of the boronate Cs[BF(2-C NF )(pin)] (pin=pinacolato=O C Me ).
