Two cis-acting elements in the p120 gene play important roles in transcription; the region from -537 to -278 is necessary for initiation of transcription, and the region from -1426 to -1223 is necessary for efficient transcription. The distal element(s) which lies upstream of -278 is required for initiation of transcription.

Background: Dementia causes the loss of functional independence, resulting in a decrease in the quality of life of those who suffer from it.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate the interactions influencing susceptibility to the development of dementia through multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR).

Methods: the study population was made up of 221 cases and 534 controls.

Article Synopsis
  • Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can produce biogenic amines (BAs) from amino acids, which is crucial for food safety, particularly in ready-to-eat fish products like smoked anchovies and mackerel.
  • The study evaluated various LAB isolates for their ability to generate different BAs and ammonia in a specific broth, noting that certain isolates had notably high ammonia levels while others had low histamine production.
  • One isolate, NZLeu 009, significantly exceeded the others with a high histamine concentration of 83.23 ppm, highlighting the varying metabolic capabilities of LAB and their implications for food safety and quality.

Projections of Extreme Temperature-Related Deaths in the US.

JAMA Netw Open

September 2024

Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Importance: Extreme heat in the US is increasing due to climate change, while extreme cold is projected to decline. Understanding how extreme temperature along with demographic changes will affect population health is important for devising policies to mitigate the health outcome of climate change.

Objective: To assess the burden of extreme temperature-related deaths in the contiguous US currently (2008-2019) and estimate the burden in the mid-21st century (2036-2065).

Article Synopsis
  • - Mental health issues are widespread in individuals who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and can worsen postconcussive symptoms; better early detection of these disorders could enhance treatment outcomes.
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of three mental health screening tools (PHQ-9, GAD-7, PC-PTSD-5) in mTBI patients, comparing their results against a structured diagnostic interview conducted via videoconference.
  • - Findings from 499 participants showed that all three screening tools had strong diagnostic accuracy for detecting major depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD among adults with mTBI, indicating their potential usefulness in clinical settings.

Nomogram development for predicting ovarian tumor malignancy using inflammatory biomarker and CA-125.

Sci Rep

July 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran, Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Prof Eykman Street No 38, Bandung, 40161, Indonesia.

Global challenges in ovarian cancer underscore the need for cost-effective screening. This study aims to assess the role of pretreatment Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte-Ratio (LMR), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and CA-125 in distinguishing benign and malignant ovarian tumors, while also constructing nomogram models for distinguish benign and malignant ovarian tumor using inflammatory biomarkers and CA-125. This is a retrospective study of 206 ovarian tumor patients.
