Human matrix metalloproteinase-8 (hMMP-8) plays a important role in the progression of colorectal cancer, metastasis, multiple sclerosis and rheumetoid arthritis. Extensive MD-simulation of the PDB and solvated structures of hMMP-8 has revealed the presence of few conserved water molecules around the catalytic and structural zinc (ZnC and ZnS) ions. The coordination of two conserved water molecules (W and WS) to ZnS and the H-bonding interaction of WS to S151 have indicated the plausible involvement of that metal ion in the catalytic process. Beside this the coupling of ZnC and ZnS metal ions (ZnC - W(H) (W(1))…..W(2) ….H(162) - ZnS) through two conserved hydrophilic centers (occupied by water molecules) may also provide some rational on the recognition of two zinc ions which were separated by ~13 Å in their X-ray structures. This unique recognition of both the Zn(+2) ions in the enzyme through conserved water molecules may be implemented/ exploited for the design of antiproteolytic agent using water mimic drug design protocol.

The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a wide-ranging, long-living freshwater species with low reproductive success, mainly due to high predation pressure. We studied how habitat variables and predator communities in near-natural marshes affect the survival of turtle eggs and hatchlings. We followed the survival of artificial turtle nests placed in marshes along Lake Balaton (Hungary) in May and June as well as hatchlings (dummies) exposed in September.

Climate change has caused many challenges to soil ecosystems, including soil salinity. Consequently, many strategies are advised to mitigate this issue. In this context, biochar is acknowledged as a useful addition that can alleviate the detrimental impacts of salt stress on plants.

Land use change can significantly alter the proportion of soil aggregates, thereby influencing aggregate stability and distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, there is minimal research on the variations in the distribution of soil aggregates, aggregate stability, and SOC in soil aggregates following land use change from farmland (FL) to forest and grassland in the Loess Plateau region of China. Select six land use patterns (farmland (FL), abandoned cropland (ACL), Medicago sativa (MS), natural grassland (NG), Picea asperata Mast.

Reservoir-operation optimisation is a crucial aspect of water-resource development and sustainable water process management. This study addresses bi-objective optimisation problems by proposing a novel crossover evolution operator, known as the hybrid simulated binary and improved arithmetic crossover (SBAX) operator, based on the simulated binary cross (SBX) and arithmetic crossover operators, and applies it to the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithms-II (NSGA-II) algorithm to improve the algorithm. In particular, the arithmetic crossover operator can obtain an optimal solution more precisely within the solution space, whereas the SBX operator can explore a broader range of potential high-quality solutions.

Applying Ra and Ra to Trace Lateral Groundwater Discharge into Lake Qinghai, China.

Ground Water

December 2024

Key Laboratory for Water Quality and Conservation of the Pearl River Delta, Ministry of Education, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou, 510006, China.

Quantifying lacustrine groundwater discharge (LGD) is important for understanding the dynamics of lake ecosystems and their expansion. This study focuses on Lake Qinghai, employing radium isotope models to evaluate the contributions of both shallow and deep groundwater. The data indicate that the activity of Ra and Ra demonstrates a pronounced gradient, decreasing from the shoreline to the center of Lake Qinghai.
