This paper uses physical-organic studies on well-defined oligomers to establish design principles for creating aromatic poly(carbamates) that depolymerize from head-to-tail in low dielectric constant environments when exposed to specific applied signals. We show that either increasing electron density or decreasing the aromaticity of aromatic repeating units in poly(carbamates) increase the overall depolymerization rate. For example, a methoxybenzene-based repeating unit provides depolymerization rates that are 143× faster than oligomers that contain a benzene-based repeating unit. Furthermore, the rate of depolymerization in the methoxybenzene-based system is tolerant to low dielectric environments, whereas the benzene-based oligomers are not.

The commercialization of metasurfaces is crucial for real-world applications such as wearable sensors, pigment-free color pixels, and augmented and virtual reality devices. Nanoparticle-embedded resin-based nanoimprint lithography (PER-NIL) has shown itself to be a low-cost, high-throughput manufacturing method enabling the replication of high-index nanostructures. It has been extensively integrated into the fabrication of hologram metasurfaces, metalenses, and sensors due to its procedural simplicity.

Dielectric profile at the Pt(111)/water interface.

The dielectric constant, although a simplified concept when considering atomic scales, enters many mean-field, electrochemical interface models and constant potential models as an important parameter. Here, we use ab initio and machine-learned molecular dynamics to scrutinize the behavior of the electronic contribution to ɛr(z) as a function of distance z from a Pt(111) surface. We show that the resulting dielectric profile can largely be explained as a sum of the metallic response and the density-scaled water response at the interface.

The complex dynamics of terahertz (THz) wave scattering by subwavelength-scale structures remain largely unexplored. This article examines the spectral scattering characteristics of subwavelength-sized spherical particles probed by tightly focused THz waves through numerical simulations and experimental techniques. The simulations reveal that the scattering intensity for lower Mie resonance modes (magnetic dipole and electric dipole modes) remains largely unaffected when THz waves are focused down to 0.

Thickness-dependent polaron crossover in tellurene.

Sci Adv

January 2025

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Rice Advanced Materials Institute, Rice University, Houston, TX 77005, USA.

Polarons, quasiparticles from electron-phonon coupling, are crucial for material properties including high-temperature superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. However, scarce studies have investigated polaron formation in low-dimensional materials with phonon polarity and electronic structure transitions. In this work, we studied polarons of tellurene, composed of chiral Te chains.
