Background: In Vietnam, the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype is associated with multi-drug resistance and is emerging. A possible explanation for this genotype's success is an increased rate of relapse.
Methods: In a prospective cohort study, isolates from patients with smear-positive tuberculosis were subjected to drug susceptibility testing and to spoligotyping and variable number of tandem repeats typing before treatment and after recurrence of tuberculosis.
Results: Among 1068 patients who were actively followed up over 18 months for recurrence, 23 relapse cases occurred (1.39 cases/100 person-years). After adjustment for genotype, tuberculosis treatment history, and drug resistance, relapse was significantly associated with the Beijing genotype (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 5.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.06-14.55) and isoniazid resistance (aHR, 5.91; 95% CI, 2.16-16.16).
Conclusions: The strongly increased relapse rate in tuberculosis cases caused by Beijing strains probably contributes to the successful spread of this genotype in Vietnam and elsewhere.

Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder mainly marked by increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations and a heightened risk of early-onset arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This study seeks to characterize the genetic spectrum and genotype‒phenotype correlations of FH in Chinese pediatric individuals.
Methods: Data were gathered from individuals diagnosed with FH either clinically or genetically at multiple hospitals across mainland China from January 2016 to June 2024.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and cerebrovascular diseases (CeVDs) are closely related vascular diseases, sharing common cardiometabolic risk factors (RFs). Although pleiotropic genetic variants of these two diseases have been reported, their underlying pathological mechanisms are still unclear. Leveraging GWAS summary data and using genetic correlation, pleiotropic variants identification, and colocalization analyses, we identified 11 colocalized loci for CVDs-CeVDs-BP (blood pressure), CVDs-CeVDs-LIP (lipid traits), and CVDs-CeVDs-cIMT (carotid intima-media thickness) triplets.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex (MTBC), the etiological agent of tuberculosis (TB), demonstrates considerable genotypic diversity with distinct geographic distributions and variable virulence profiles. The pe-ppe gene family is especially noteworthy for its extensive variability and roles in host immune response modulation and virulence enhancement. We sequenced an Mtb genotype L2.

Beneficial interactions between plant root exudates and the rhizosphere microbial community can alleviate the adverse effects of environmental stress on crop yields, but these interactions remain poorly understood in potato growing in drying soil. We investigated the responses of rhizosphere soil microorganisms and metabolites, and biochemical and physiological responses of two potato genotypes with contrasting drought tolerance (drought tolerant 'C93' and drought sensitive 'Favorita'), to two different irrigation treatments imposing contrasting soil water availability in the field. Deficit irrigation altered rhizosphere soil bacterial communities and metabolites of C93 more than Favorita.

The genus infects both humans and NHPs. In zoos, visitors feeding significantly increases the frequency of human-to-NHP contact, thereby raising the risk of zoonotic transmission. In this study, six species were investigated and analyzed in the fecal samples of 14 NHP species from zoos in Beijing, Guiyang, Shijiazhuang, Tangshan, and Xingtai in China.
