[A newborn with tachypnea].

Ned Tijdschr Geneeskd

Slotervaartziekenhuis, afd. Kindergeneeskunde, Amsterdam.

Published: April 2013

A neonate developed a tachypnea 2 hours after his birth. Blood measurements showed low infectious parameters and a respirator acidosis. The x-ray showed a pneumomediastinum. A spontaneous pneumomediastinum is rare in newborns, causes can be underlying lung diseases or mechanical ventilation. The treatment prognosis is good; spontaneous recovery without treatment is common.

Introduction: Neonatal respiratory conditions are leading causes of mortality and morbidity during the neonatal period. This review evaluated 11 management interventions for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), apnoea of prematurity (AOP), meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), as well as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) as a potential complication from respiratory care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Methods: Two different methodological approaches were completed: (1) updating outdated reviews and pooling all LMIC studies and (2) re-analysis of LMIC studies from up-to-date reviews.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the effectiveness of lung ultrasound in diagnosing common neonatal lung diseases among 160 newborns admitted with suspected issues between January 2020 and June 2023.
  • The results showed that lung ultrasound had high accuracy rates for various conditions, with specific accuracies ranging from 96.8% for pneumonia to 100% for pneumothorax and atelectasis.
  • The overall performance of lung ultrasound indicated an 85.00% detection rate, with a sensitivity of 95.77% and a specificity of 77.77%, highlighting its significant role in differentiating neonatal lung diseases.
