The acrosome reaction of newt sperm is induced at the surface of egg jelly and the acrosome-reacted sperm acquire the ability to bind to the vitelline envelope. However, because the substance that induces the acrosome reaction has not been identified, the mechanism by which the acrosome-reacted sperm bind to the vitelline envelope remains unclear. We found here that a Dolichos biforus agglutinin (DBA) specifically mimicked the acrosome reaction immediately upon its addition in the presence of milimolar level Ca(2+).

The gastric glands of Triturus carnifex (Amphibia, Caudata) have been examined by histochemical and immunohistochemical methods with particular regard to hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen secretion. Fundic glands consist of mucous neck cells, endocrine cells and oxynticopeptic cells producing both pepsinogen and hydrochloric acid. The neck cells showed an unexpected distribution pattern which was only observed in the oral fundus, and produced neutral mucins with glycosidic residues of GalNAc and Gal beta1,3GalNAc, and in this respect they differ from the neck cells of anuran amphibians.

The amphibian testis is a useful model because of its zonal organisation in lobules, distributed along the cephalocaudal axis, each containing a unique germ cell type. Sperm empty lobules form the so-called glandular tissue at the posterior region of the gonad. Androgen production is limited to the cells of the interstitial tissue surrounding lobules with spermatozoa bundles and to the cells of the glandular tissue.

In the brain of the salamander Pleurodeles waltl, microglial cells were investigated cytochemically with isolectin B4 (IB4) of Bandeiraea simplicifolia after optic nerve transection and during subsequent regeneration. Double-labeling with an antibody directed against the glial fibrillary acidic protein of astrocytes revealed no immunoreactivity in microglial cells and confirmed the absence of non-radial, free astroglial cells in the tectum. After two days, IB4-labeled microglial cells began to populate the rostral parts of the primary visual system.

Tetravalent native concanavalin A (Con A) has a neural inducing effect on amphibian presumptive ectoderm. The divalent dimeric form of this lectin, succinylated Con A (Succ-Con A), is devoid of neuralizing action on this target tissue in Pleurodeles waltlii. These results suggested that cross-linking of Con A receptors on the cell membrane (which is not provoked by the divalent lectin) might be required for neural induction.
