We report on the formation of unprecedented "leek"-shaped aggregates of an anionic fluoroalkyl sulfonate surfactant (FS) and the supramolecular assembly of these aggregates into a disordered columnar phase (CS). The leeks are formed by wrapping of 2-4 FS-water bilayers of thickness 26-28 Å into 10-20 nm thick and >100 nm long structures, in the concentration regime of 63-70 wt % FS. A lamellar (Lα) lyotropic liquid-crystalline (LLC) phase forms at higher concentration, between 70 and 84 wt %. In the two LLC phases, the FS molecules were organized in an interdigitated or tilted fashion, or a combination of the two. Such a unique supramolecular self-assembly of amphiphiles has not been predicted nor observed before. This self-assembly behavior could be of interest to various fields like microencapsulation, nanomedicine, and membrane protein crystallization.

One of the first organizing processes during animal development is the assembly of embryonic cells into epithelia. Common features unite epithelialization across select bilaterians, however, we know less about the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive epithelial emergence in early branching nonbilaterians. In sea anemones, epithelia emerge both during embryonic development and after cell aggregation of dissociated tissues.

Highly ordered liquid crystalline (LC) phases have important potential for organic electronics. We studied the molecular alignment and domain structure in a columnar LC thin film with nanometer resolution during in situ heating using four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D STEM). The initial disordered vapor-deposited LC glass thin film rapidly ordered at its glass transition temperature into a hexagonal columnar phase with small (<10 nm), well-aligned, planar domains (columns oriented parallel to the surface).

Concerns about microplastic (MP) pollution in terrestrial systems are increasing. It is believed that the overall amount of MPs in the terrestrial system could be 4-23 times higher than that in the ocean. Agricultural ecosystems are among the most polluted areas with MPs.

Supramolecular polymerization and bulk properties relationship in ester-functionalized -annulated perylenediimides.

The synthesis of a series of -annulated perylenediimides (NPDIs) 1-4 with an ester group and an alkyl spacer of different length in the peripheral chains was carried out, and the influence of the side chain architecture on the self-assembly, both in solution and in the solid state, was investigated. Solution studies evidenced that the carbonyl group plays a key role in the supramolecular organization of these derivatives, changing from an H-type isodesmic polymerization (4) to a J-type cooperative process as the spacer length decreases (1-3). On the other hand, bulk assays revealed an odd-even effect that correlates with the length of the alkyl spacer.

Designing Highly Ordered Helical and Nonhelical Porous Crystalline and Disordered Nonhelical Columnar Liquid Crystalline Self-Organizations.

Helical self-organizations are equilibrium structures responsible for the assembly of nonequilibrium and equilibrium living and synthetic systems. Racemic helical columnar systems transform into one-handed systems with the help of enantiomerically rich or pure components. Racemic, enantiomerically rich, and enantiomerically pure helical periodic arrays of columns are analyzed by oriented fiber X-ray diffraction (XRD).
