The reactions of enantiopure chiral ligands (+)/(−)-4,5-pinenepyridyl-2-pyrazine (LS/LR) with CuCl2·2H2O in CH3OH/CH2Cl2 solution led to the formations of one-dimensional homochiral enantiomeric pairs with the formula [Cu(LR/S)Cl2]n·2H2O (R-1 and S-1, the isomers containing the LR and LS ligands, respectively). The circular dichroism (CD) spectra verified their chiroptical activities and enantiomeric natures. Their structures have been determined by X-ray single-crystal analyses, showing stairway-like and mirror-symmetric features, which represent the first examples of homochiral metal complexes with stairway-like structures. The ferroelectric property measurement indicated that R-1 exhibits ferroelectricity with the remnant polarization (Pr) value of 0.02 μC cm−2 under an applied electric field of 6.1 kV cm−1 at room temperature. The magnetic investigation of R-1 showed a weak intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II)–Cu(II) ions mediated by pyrazine, which can be interpreted by a spin-polarization mechanism. All these results suggested that R-1 and S-1 are potential multifunctional molecule-based materials combining optical activity, ferroelectricity and magnetism within one molecule.

Optically pure ()- and racemic (/)--1,2-di(tetrazol-1-yl)cyclopentane were synthesized and used to prepare homo- and heterochiral Fe(II) coordination compounds. [Fe((/)-CHN)(CHCN)](BF) (), [Fe((/)-CHN)(CHCN)](BF) (), [Fe(()-CHN)(CHCN)](BF)·2CHCN (), and [Fe(()-CHN)(CHCN)](BF) () form a family of one-dimensional coordination polymers. Fe(II) cations in these complexes are characterized by a heteroleptic coordination environment: the neighboring metal centers are bridged by two 1,2-di(tetrazol-1-yl)cyclopentane molecules, while the nitrile molecules (acetonitrile or propionitrile, respectively) occupy the axial positions.

Chiral aluminum oxo clusters (cAlOCs) are distinguished from other classes of materials on account of their abundance in the earth's crust and their potential for sustainable development. However, the practical synthesis of cAlOCs is rarely known. Herein, we adopt a synergistic coordination strategy by using chiral amino acid ligands as bridges and auxiliary pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid as chelating ligands and successfully isolate an extensive family of cAlOCs.

Homochiral halide perovskites have gained increasing attention because of their fascinating optoelectronic properties and prospective applications in laser technologies. However, the limited choice of chiral organic templates severely restricts their structural diversity and second-harmonic generation (SHG) effects. Here, we present an in situ chiral template approach for the synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) homochiral lead iodides.

Two helical ligands ( and ) were designed and synthesized by a Schiff base condensation reaction. Eight complexes, {[Zn()I]·HO} (), [Cd()I(CHOH)] (), [Hg()I] (), [Ag()NO] (), [Ag()(NO)DMSO]·HO (), {[Zn()Cl]·2CHCl} (), {[Ag()]·NO} (), and {[Ag()NO]·CHOH} (), were synthesized and characterized based on these two ligands. The crystal structures show that both Schiff base compounds exist as racemic ligands with equal amounts of - and -helicity, and the assembly of these racemic ligands with metal ions can lead to homochiral or heterochiral complexes via a chiral self-recognition or self-discrimination process.

Evolutionary Approach to Biological Homochirality.

We study a very simple linear evolutionary model based on distribution of protocells by total enantiomeric excess and without any mutual inhibition and show that such model can produce two species with values of total enantiomeric excess in each of the species approaching [Formula: see text] when there is a global [Formula: see text] symmetry. We then consider a scenario when there is a small external global asymmetry factor, like weak interaction, and show that only one of the species remains in such a case, and that is the one, which is more efficient in replication. We perform an estimate of the time necessary to reach homochirality in such a model and show that reasonable assumptions lead to an estimate of around 300 thousand years plus or minus a couple of orders of magnitude.
