Hyperthyroidism may lead to a loss of sperm motility and an increase in oxidative stress (OS) in testes and may cause male reproductive disorders. Thus, the use of compounds with antioxidant properties may be a strategy for preventing these disorders. The effect of resveratrol (RSV) on sperm motility and on variables of the antioxidant status in the testes of rats with triiodothyronine-induced hyperthyroidism (100μg/kg) was investigated. Hyperthyroid rats presented lower sperm motility, higher levels of lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric reactive substances, lower catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities and higher glutathione-S-transferase activity in their testes than control animals. RSV treatment (1mg/kg and 10mg/kg) was able to prevent these effects in the hyperthyroid rats and had no effect in the control animals. In conclusion, RSV might be a strategy for therapeutic intervention to preserve sperm motility and to prevent OS in testes, preserving testicular function in those with hyperthyroidism.

Glucose-6-Phosphatase (G6Pase), a key enzyme in gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis in the mammalian liver and kidney, converts glucose-6-phosphate to glucose for maintaining systemic blood glucose homeostasis during nutrient deprivation. However, its function has remained elusive in insects, which have no need for G6Pase in sugar homeostasis since they convert glucose-6-phosphate to trehalose, their main circulating sugar, via trehalose phosphate synthase (TPS1). In this study we identify an unexpected and essential requirement for G6Pase in male fertility, specifically to produce motile sperm.

Growing evidence suggests reduced semen quality also before therapy. The present study aimed to evaluate pre-orchiectomy semen parameters in GCT patients and to compare the results with controls.

Recently, the World Health Organization recommendation for abstinence time for semen analysis has been challenged in some studies and many of them have supported the advantages of a second short abstinence ejaculation. More evidence is needed to approve this for clinical use. This study aimed to compare the average routine abstinence time (2-7 days) with the short time (1-2 h) on sperm quality based on functional parameters in a population of oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT) men.

The cryopreservation of human spermatozoa is an integral part of cryobiology, aiming to support the in-vitro fertilization. The latter relies on the availability of as much as possible reproductively active spermatozoa, whose number after thawing decreases due to the accompanied freezing injury and the cytotoxicity of cryoprotectants. An innovative option to circumvent these obstacles is to make the freezing interface non-wettable, by coating it with rapeseed oil soot possessing intrinsic cryoprotective properties, delaying the ice formation and possibly providing identical rates of intracellular dehydration and extracellular crystallization.

Background: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) primarily acquired through sexual contact. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time reported the association of STIs with male infertility. Infertility is described as the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after engaging in regular, unprotected sexual intercourse for a year or more.
