This paper reviews recent work in the area of silicon photonic devices and circuits for monolithic and heterogeneous integration of circuits and systems on a chip. In this context, it presents fabrication results for producing low-loss silicon waveguides without etching. Resonators and add-drop distributed filters utilizing sidewall modulation fabricated in a single lithography and etching step are demonstrated. It also presents an optical pulse compressor that monolithically integrates self-phase modulation and anomalous dispersion compensation devices on a silicon chip. As an example of heterogeneous integration, we demonstrate vertical emitting metallo-dielectric nanolasers integrated onto a silicon platform. Future research directions toward large-scale photonic circuits and systems on a chip also are discussed.

Background: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has transformed biological research by offering new insights into cellular heterogeneity, developmental processes, and disease mechanisms. As scRNA-seq technology advances, its role in modern biology has become increasingly vital. This study explores the application of deep learning to single-cell data clustering, with a particular focus on managing sparse, high-dimensional data.

Based on a balanced panel dataset of 272 prefecture-level cities from 2000 to 2022, this paper systematically investigates the impact of the carbon emissions trading system on green total factor productivity and its underlying mechanisms from an integrated perspective of overall, dynamic, and spatial dimensions. The findings reveal that (1) the carbon emissions trading system significantly enhances regional total factor productivity, primarily by optimizing resource allocation efficiency and strengthening regional competitiveness. (2) From a dynamic perspective, the policy effect exhibited a U-shaped relationship: from 2013 to 2018, green total factor productivity was suppressed due to underdeveloped market mechanisms and the policy environment; after 2018, with market maturation and policy stabilization, the policy effects improved significantly.

Combinatorial treatments integrating cells and biomolecules within scaffolds have been investigated to address the multifactorial nature of spinal cord injury (SCI). Current regenerative treatments have been ineffective as they do not consider the spatial positions of various cell types to effectively form functional neural pathways. Emulating the complex heterogeneity of cells in the native spinal cord requires translating the existing biological understanding of spatial patterning in neural development, as well as the influence of biomolecule and mechanical patterning on regional specification and axonal regeneration, to engineer a scaffold for spinal cord regeneration.

Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease, and accurate cancer subtyping can significantly improve patient survival rates. The complexity of cancer spans multiple omics levels, and analyzing multi-omics data for cancer subtyping is a focus of considerable attention. However, extracting complementary information from different omics data sources and adaptively integrating them remains a major challenge.
