A melody's identity is determined by relations between consecutive tones in terms of pitch and duration, whereas surface features (i.e., pitch level or key, tempo, and timbre) are irrelevant. Although surface features of highly familiar recordings are encoded into memory, little is known about listeners' mental representations of melodies heard once or twice. It is also unknown whether musical pitch is represented additively or interactively with temporal information. In two experiments, listeners heard unfamiliar melodies twice in an initial exposure phase. In a subsequent test phase, they heard the same (old) melodies interspersed with new melodies. Some of the old melodies were shifted in key, tempo, or key and tempo. Listeners' task was to rate how well they recognized each melody from the exposure phase while ignoring changes in key and tempo. Recognition ratings were higher for old melodies that stayed the same compared to those that were shifted in key or tempo, and detrimental effects of key and tempo changes were additive in between-subjects (Experiment 1) and within-subjects (Experiment 2) designs. The results confirm that surface features are remembered for melodies heard only twice. They also imply that key and tempo are processed and stored independently.

In a changing environment, vacant niches can be filled either by adaptation of local taxa or range-expanding invading species. The relative tempo of these patterns is of key interest in the modern age of climate change. Aotearoa New Zealand has been a hotspot of biogeographic research for decades due to its long-term isolation and dramatic geological history.

An N,N,N-type Cu(Ⅱ) complex-catalyzed desaturation method for converting alcohols, ketones, lactones, and lactams to their α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds is reported. The dehydrogenation reaction can be conducted with a green terminal oxidant O2 without requiring strong acid/base or stoichiometric oxidants. The Cu(Ⅱ) complex/TEMPO/O2 system uses a non-noble catalyst, and a green terminal oxidant as well as demonstrates high activity and functional group tolerance.

Uncontrolled release of active agents in active packaging reduces antimicrobial efficacy, hindering the effective protection of perishable products from microbial infection. Herein, a novel defective engineering was proposed to design defective and hollow ZIF-8 structures grown on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) and use them as fast-reacting nanocarriers for loading and controlled release curcumin (Cur) in sodium alginate (SA) active packaging systems (CZT-Cur-SA). By employing stable chelation between tannic acid (TA) and ZIF-8 zinc ions, the connections between zinc ions and imidazole ligands were severed to form a loose and hollow structure, which facilitates the rapid reaction and release of active ingredients triggered by pH changes in the microenvironment.

PM has a detrimental impact on human health and has become a focus of widespread concern. The tempo-spatial distribution of emerging pollutants has been extensively studied, while there is a scarcity of understanding their vertical distribution in atmospheric environment. Here we investigated the vertical profiles of phthalate esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), neonicotinoids (NEOs), and per-and polyfluorinated substances (PFASs) in PM at ground level (4.

2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives are typical catholytes in aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs), but reported lifetime of them is limited. We find that the increase of Hirshfeld charge decreases the Gibbs free energy change (ΔG) values of side reactions of TEMPO, a near-linear relationship, and then exacerbates their degradation. Here we predict and synthesize a TEMPO derivative, namely TPP-TEMPO, by analyzing the Hirshfeld charge.
