Published: January 2013

By transforming heat flux from particle to wave phonon transport, we introduce a new class of engineered material to control thermal conduction. We show that rationally designed nanostructured alloys can lead to a fundamental new approach for thermal management, guiding heat as photonic and phononic crystals guide light and sound, respectively. Novel applications for these materials include heat waveguides, thermal lattices, heat imaging, thermo-optics, thermal diodes, and thermal cloaking.

The complex, varied composition (i.e., rubbers/elastomers, carbon black, fillers, additives, and embedded road materials) and wide density range of tire road wear particles (TRWPs) present challenges for their isolation and identification from environmental matrices.

Stay-green (SG) and stem reserve mobilization (SRM) are two significant mutually exclusive traits, which contributes to grain-filling during drought and heat stress in wheat. The current research was conducted in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) panel consisting of 278 wheat genotypes of advanced breeding lines to find the markers linked with SG and SRM traits and also to screen the superior genotypes. SG and SRM traits, viz.

Eccentric planets may spend a significant portion of their orbits at large distances from their host stars, where low temperatures can cause atmospheric CO to condense out onto the surface, similar to the polar ice caps on Mars. The radiative effects on the climates of these planets throughout their orbits would depend on the wavelength-dependent albedo of surface CO ice that may accumulate at or near apoastron and vary according to the spectral energy distribution of the host star. To explore these possible effects, we incorporated a CO ice-albedo parameterization into a one-dimensional energy balance climate model.

As the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) increases, the shortened cycle life and the increased safety hazards of LIBs are drawing increasing concerns. To address such challenges, a series of localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) based on a solvating-solvent mixture of tetramethylene sulfone and trimethyl phosphate and a high flash-point diluent 1H,1H,5H-octafluoropentyl 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl ether were designed. The LHCEs exhibited nonflammability and greatly suppressed heat release at elevated temperatures, which would potentially improve the safety performance of the LIBs.

Anisometric plasmonic nanoparticles find applications in various fields, from photocatalysis to biosensing. However, exposure to heat or to specific chemical environments can induce their reshaping, leading to loss of function. Understanding this process is therefore relevant both for the fundamental understanding of such nano-objects and for their practical applications.
