Background: Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic human pathogen that is widely distributed in estuarine environments and is capable of causing necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis. In Japan, based on epidemiological research, the incidences of V. vulnificus were concentrated in Kyusyu, mainly in coastal areas of the Ariake Sea. To examine the virulence potential, various genotyping methods have recently been developed. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of virulence markers among V. vulnificus isolates of clinical and environmental origin in three coastal areas with different infection incidences and to determine whether these isolates have the siderophore encoding gene viuB.
Methodology/principal Findings: We examined the distribution of genotypes of the 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene, vvhA, vcg, and capsular polysaccharide (CPS), and the presence of viuB in 156 isolates collected from patients and environmental samples in Japan. The environmental samples were collected from three coastal areas: the Ariake Sea, Ise & Mikawa Bay, and Karatsu Bay. The results showed disparity in the ratios of genotypes depending on the sample origins. V. vulnificus isolates obtained from patients were classified into the clinical type for all genotypes. In the environmental isolates, the ratios of the clinical type for genotypes of the 16S rRNA gene, vvhA, and vcg were in the order of the Ariake Sea>Ise & Mikawa Bay>Karatsu Bay. Meanwhile, CPS analysis showed no significant difference. Most isolates possessed viuB.
Conclusions: Many V. vulnificus belonging to the clinical type existed in the Ariake Sea. Three coastal areas with different infection incidences showed distinct ratios of genotypes. This may indicate that the distribution of clinical isolates correlates with the incidence of V. vulnificus infection.

Marine ecosystems, particularly coastal areas, are becoming increasingly vulnerable to pollution from human activities. Persistent organic pollutants and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are recognized as significant threats to both human and environmental health. Our study aimed to identify the molecules present in the seawater of two bathing areas in the Western Mediterranean Sea.

Seawater intrusion and human activities have significantly impacted coastal groundwater quality in many regions worldwide. This study systematically assessed groundwater chemistry, its suitability for drinking and irrigation (sample size, n = 3034), and exposure risks (n = 2863) across three key sub-regions of the Bohai Sea area: Bohai Bay, Liaodong Bay, and Laizhou Bay. Significant seasonal variations observed in groundwater chemistry at different depths in Bohai Bay region, with severe contamination from salinity-alkalinity and nitrogen-fluoride.

This research investigated the relationship between microplastic accumulation and the sediment texture in seagrass meadows across the selected coastal regions of Tuticorin. Sixteen sediment samples were collected by SCUBA divers utilizing a stainless steel grab sampler. Findings indicate significantly elevated microplastic concentrations in seagrass sediments when compared to unvegetated areas.

Investigations of the spatial-temporal variations of nutrients within mangrove coastal zones are essential for assessing the environmental status of an aquatic ecosystems. However, major processes controlling nitrate cycle along the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) pathway from the mangrove areas to adjacent tidal creek remain underexplored. A time series measurement over a 25 h tidal cycle was conducted in Qinglan Bay tidal creek (Hainan Island, China).

Background: Existing environmental quality indices often fail to account for the varying health impacts of different exposures and exclude socio-economic status indicators (SES).
Objectives: To develop and validate a comprehensive Environmental Quality Health Index (EQHI) that integrates multiple environmental exposures and SES to assess mortality risks across Australia.
Methods: We combined all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality data (2016-2019) from 2,180 Statistical Areas Level 2 with annual mean values of 12 environmental exposures, including PM, ozone, temperature, humidity, normalized difference vegetation index, night light, road and building density, and socioeconomic status.
