In the wake of the November 2024 US election, several commentators have suggested that the US Democratic Party abandon its commitment to so-called "identity politics," which they identify as elitist, condescending, and divisive. They argue that rather than focusing on these "cultural" issues, progressives should prioritize economic concerns. Yet identity politics, at a fundamental level, is driven, and dominated, by economic concerns.

Since the mid-twentieth century, the shared goal of healthcare systems of Canada and the Netherlands has been to achieve broad healthcare access and coverage for citizens despite their health system differences. However, the rhetoric of "state" control in Canada and "market" control in the Netherlands belies very different realities in both countries. A longer historical perspective uncovers the discrepancies between the rhetoric and reality of solidarity that has emerged - and still exists - in both countries.

Horse racing holds significant cultural value, while greyhound racing is economically important at the regional level. There is a growing worry about the health of American democracy, and political scientists and pundits alike are looking for possible explanations. Surveys conducted during the Trump presidency showed considerable citizen support for liberal democratic norm erosions, especially among Republicans. However, recent experimental research also shows that voters of both parties are more tolerant of norm erosion committed by politicians of the party they prefer.
