We present an editorial on an article that highlights the benefits of dexmedetomidine (Dex) in colon cancer surgeries, which have been thoroughly investigated in the referenced publication involving 117 subjects. Of these patients, 59 (group A) received Dex before anesthesia induction, while 58 (group B) received normal saline. Group A patients demonstrated several advantages over Group B, including lower propofol and remifentanil requirements, improved cerebral oxygenation as measured by regional cerebral oxygen saturation, better hemodynamic stability, and reduced incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

Background: Postoperative pain usually occur in patients who have undergone functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Remimazolam and dexmedetomidine could enhance the quality of recovery (QoR) after surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of remimazolam and dexmedetomidine with respect to the QoR-40 score of patients who have undergone FESS.

Opioid-sparing anesthesia (OSA) using dexmedetomidine has gained attention as an alternative to opioid-based anesthesia (OBA) due to its potential to reduce opioid consumption and the associated side effects. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine-based OSA on postoperative pain intensity, opioid consumption, and recovery outcomes in patients undergoing a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum. Eighty-four patients undergoing a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum were randomized to either the OSA group, receiving dexmedetomidine, or the OBA group, receiving remifentanil.

Background: To improve perioperative pain management, several interventions have been suggested for the prevention of increased pain sensitivity caused by opioids (called opioid-induced hyperalgesia). It is currently unclear which intervention is the most effective or appropriate in preventing opioid-induced hyperalgesia. Remifentanil is the most investigated opioid causing opioid-induced hyperalgesia.
