Importance: Acupoint autohemotherapy (AA), a therapeutic technique involving the subcutaneous injection of autologous blood into acupoints, has been empirically validated as safe and effective for treating asthma by alleviating symptoms and decreasing acute attacks, though its mechanism is not well understood.

Objective: The role of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in AA-induced suppression of asthmatic airway inflammation is examined.

Methods: Twenty rats were assigned randomly to four groups, namely the Control, OVA, OVA + AA, and (OVA + Snpp) + AA.

Based on (), combined with the ( ) and unearthed (), it is recognized that the therapeutic indications of Fenglong (ST 40) were recorded repeatedly in many medical works of the Qin and Han dynasties; and the treatments mostly focus on "upward reversion of ". In (), a part of symptoms were re-described textually, which affects the understanding on the indications of Fenglong (ST 40) in the medical works of the later generations. On the basis of the construction of phlegm theory in the Sui and Tang dynasties, the scholars of Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties had placed the emphasis on the relationship between phlegm and movement.

Research on the Mechanism and Application of Acupuncture Therapy for Asthma: A Review.

J Asthma Allergy

Department of Acupuncture and Tuina, Wenzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, People's Republic of China.

Asthma is a high-risk disease based on airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). In this review, we found that there are many studies on clinical therapy for asthma that focus on the efficacy of acupuncture therapy and its mechanisms, including the functional connectivity of different brain regions, with the aid of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), immune responses/cell recognition (innate lymphoid cells and balance of Th1/Th2 and Treg/Th17), intracellular mechanism (autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and epigenetic alteration), and ligand-receptor/chemical signaling pathway (neurotransmitter, hormone, and small molecules). In this review, we summarized the clinical and experimental evidence for the mechanisms of acupuncture therapy in asthma to offer insights into drug discovery and clinical therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Electroacupuncture (EA) at the BL13 acupoint is effective in improving lung function and reducing inflammation in allergic asthma, though the underlying mechanisms were unclear prior to this study.
  • The study used methods like immunoassays and staining techniques to analyze the effects of EA on airway inflammation and cytokine levels, finding significant changes in interleukin levels and mucus secretion.
  • Results indicated that EA activates somatosensory-sympathetic pathways, leading to the release of catecholamines that decrease inflammatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-5, thus supporting EA's role in treating allergic asthma and potentially other respiratory disorders.
