Extension of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to nanoscale samples has been a longstanding challenge because of the insensitivity of conventional detection methods. We demonstrated the use of an individual, near-surface nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond as a sensor to detect proton NMR in an organic sample located external to the diamond. Using a combination of electron spin echoes and proton spin manipulation, we showed that the NV center senses the nanotesla field fluctuations from the protons, enabling both time-domain and spectroscopic NMR measurements on the nanometer scale.

This study tackles the challenge of enantiodifferentiation of nitrile compounds, which is typically difficult to resolve using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) due to the significant distance between the chiral center and the nitrogen atom involved in molecular interactions. We have developed novel chiral F-labeled probes, each featuring two chiral centers, to exploit the "match-mismatch" effect, thereby enhancing enantiodiscrimination. This strategy effectively differentiates chiral analytes with quaternary chiral carbon centers as well as those with similar substituents at the chiral center.

Indoprofen (INP) comprises two enantiomers, R- and S-, whose high pharmacological efficacy is realized only in the case of the separated enantiomers. A newly synthesized poly(acrylonitrile-co-divinylbenzene) (PANB)-based sorbent with selective affinity to the S-enantiomer of INP was applied to separate INP racemate. The synthesis was performed by suspension polymerization with low-crosslinked PANB microparticles and by reaction of the inserted nitriles with 1-amino-1H-pyrrole-2,5‑dione (Ma-NH).

Lanthanide atoms show long magnetic lifetimes because of their strongly localized 4 electrons, but electrical control of their spins has been difficult because of their closed valence shell configurations. We achieved electron spin resonance of individual lanthanide atoms using a scanning tunneling microscope to probe the atoms bound to a protective insulating film. The atoms on this surface formed a singly charged cation state having an unpaired 6 electron, enabling tunnel current to access their 4 electrons.
