Best of both worlds: The interplay of active site reactivity and the dynamic character of proteins allows enzymes to be promiscuous and--sometimes--remarkably efficient at the same time. This review analyses the roles structural flexibility and chemical reactivity play in the catalytic mechanism of selected enzymes.

The objective of the present work was to prepare hybrid epoxy composites with improved mechanical and thermal properties. The simultaneous use of two different modifiers in an epoxy resin was motivated by the expected occurrence of synergistic effects on the performance properties of the matrix. Such a hybrid composite can be used in more severe conditions and/or in broader application areas.

Amidst the pervasive threat of bacterial afflictions, the imperative for advanced antibiofilm surfaces with robust antimicrobial efficacy looms large. This study unveils a sophisticated ultrasonic synthesis method for cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs, 10-20 nm in diameter and 300-900 nm in length) and their subsequent application as coatings on flexible substrates, namely cotton (CC-1) and membrane (CM-1). The cellulose nanocrystals showed excellent water repellency with a water contact angle as high as 148° on the membrane.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the topical application of a photosensitizer and its activation by visible light, leading to the generation of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) and reactive oxygen species. Daylight photodynamic therapy (dPDT), a variant utilizing natural sunlight as the energy source, enhances procedural flexibility by eliminating the need for specialized equipment. dPDT has been effectively used in dermatology to treat various cutaneous disorders, including neoplastic and infectious diseases.

Cellulose nanofibers gained increasing interest in the production of medical devices such as mucoadhesive nanohydrogels due to their ability to retain moisture (high hydrophilicity), flexibility, superior porosity and durability, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. In this work, we aimed to compare the suitability of selected bacterial and vegetal nanocellulose to form hydrogels for biomedical applications. The vegetal and bacterial cellulose nanofibers were synthesized from brewer's spent grains (BSG) and kombucha membranes, respectively.

Background: Echolocating bats face an intense arms race with insect prey that can detect bat calls and initiate evasive maneuvers. Their high closing speeds and short biosonar ranges leave bats with only a few 100 ms between detection and capture, suggesting a reactive sensory-motor operation that might preclude tracking of escaping prey. Here we test this hypothesis using greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) as a model species.
