Regular population monitoring of imperilled charismatic species such as large carnivores is critical for conservation. However, the role of monitoring in conservation is frequently diminished due to: 1) surveys being implemented in isolation, 2) limited on-ground-capacity leading to infrequent monitoring, and 3) inappropriate methods being applied. Wildlife monitoring is often resource-intensive and the utility and cost of different field protocols is rarely reported.

Article Synopsis
  • Large language models (LLMs) show promise for clinical use, but issues with errors and harmful outputs limit their application, especially in rare diseases (RDs).
  • The study presents RDguru, an AI agent built on the LangChain framework using GPT-3.5-turbo, which provides advanced medical consultations, knowledge Q&A, and a unique diagnostic model for improved accuracy.
  • RDguru outperforms ChatGPT and current top methods by effectively integrating multiple diagnostic strategies and enhancing clinical decision-making in rare disease cases.

Analysis and applications of respiratory surface EMG: report of a round table meeting.

Crit Care

January 2024

Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology, TechMed Centre, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) can be used to measure the electrical activity of the respiratory muscles. The possible applications of sEMG span from patients suffering from acute respiratory failure to patients receiving chronic home mechanical ventilation, to evaluate muscle function, titrate ventilatory support and guide treatment. However, sEMG is mainly used as a monitoring tool for research and its use in clinical practice is still limited-in part due to a lack of standardization and transparent reporting.

This article presents a self-corrective network-based long-term tracker (SCLT) including a self-modulated tracking reliability evaluator (STRE) and a self-adjusting proposal postprocessor (SPPP). The targets in the long-term sequences often suffer from severe appearance variations. Existing long-term trackers often online update their models to adapt the variations, but the inaccurate tracking results introduce cumulative error into the updated model that may cause severe drift issue.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, when combined with radiotherapy, serves as an optional treatment for patients with locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer and is usually performed in conjunction with complete mesocolic excision. The substantial movement of surrounding organs in cases of sigmoid colon cancer frequently leads to toxicity in normal tissues. The present report details the case of a 76-year-old man diagnosed with locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer.
