Background: The present study aims at better establishing the alterations caused by the usual enlargement of brain ventricles in this structure.
Methods: Hydrocephalus was induced in 7-day-old Wistar rats by the injection of kaolin into the cisterna magna. Morphological studies were performed on the hippocampus 7, 14 and 21 days after injection. The total number of neurons in each hippocampus subarea as well as that of pyknotic neurons were counted. Then we calculated the pyknotic index (PI) by hippocampal subarea, taking into account the level of ventricular dilatation and time of induction of hydrocephalus.
Results: PI was statistically larger in the CA1 subarea of the experimental group after 1 week of hydrocephalus induction as compared to the corresponding control as well as in animals that had developed mild hydrocephalus in groups G1, G2 and G3.
Conclusion: Hydrocephalus caused morphological alterations in the hippocampus, leading to important changes in its shape.

Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IIR/I) significantly increases morbidity and mortality. This study examines the therapeutic effects of geraniol (GNL), which is noted for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, on intestinal I/R injury in rats. Forty-nine male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into seven groups.

Orchidectomy and estrogenization of the male represent a procedure that is applicable in sex reassignment or in prostate cancer therapy. This approach has an influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and thus affects cardiovascular function and metabolism. We utilized orchidectomized rats to evaluate the effects of estradiol on the structure and hormonal output of the adrenal gland.

Background: In the Kazakh community of Xinjiang, China, fermented camel milk has been traditionally used to manage diabetes. This study evaluates the effects of composite probiotics derived from fermented camel milk (CPCM) on metabolic disturbances in a rat model of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
Methods: T2DM was induced in Wistar rats using streptozotocin.

We performed morphological and immunohistochemical analyses of erythrocyte-rich vascular proliferative lesions of mesenteric lymph nodes in six male and one female Wistar Hannover rats. These lesions are conventionally diagnosed as hemangiomas due to abundant erythrocytes. Immunostaining was positive for prospero-related homeobox 1 (Prox-1) and/or vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR3) in all lesions, suggesting a lymphangitic origin.
