Synthesis, isolation, and characterization of isomerically pure syn- and anti-anthradiindole (ADI) derivatives are described. The anti- and syn-ADI structures are demonstrated by (13)C NMR spectroscopy and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as the stability of these newly synthesized π-conjugated systems are evaluated and supported by quantum-chemical calculations.

Chitin is the second most abundant biopolymer in nature after cellulose and is composed of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) connected via β(1 → 4)-glycosidic bonds. Despite its prominence in nature and diverse roles in pharmaceutical and food technological applications, there is still a need to develop methods to study structure and function of chitin and its corresponding oligomers. Efforts have been made to analyse chitin oligomers by NMR spectroscopy, but spectral overlap has prevented any differentiation between the interior residues.

The 4-aminoquinazoline scaffold is a privileged structure in medicinal chemistry. Regioselective nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SAr) for replacing the chlorine atom at the 4-position of 2,4-dichloroquinazoline precursors is well documented in the scientific literature and has proven useful in synthesizing 2-chloro-4-aminoquinazolines and/or 2,4-diaminoquinazolines for various therapeutic applications. While numerous reports describe reaction conditions involving different nucleophiles, solvents, temperatures, and reaction times, discussions on the regioselectivity of the SAr step remain scarce.

In this study, UV-induced ()-to-() geometrical isomerizations of the curcumin degradation product ()-dehydrozingerone, along with curcumin-inspired ()--methylated dehydrozingerone and their corresponding C-symmetric dimers, were investigated. All compounds produced corresponding () isomers in varying yields upon UV irradiation in deuterated solvents. The efficiency of these photoisomerizations depended on the solvent and wavelength used.
