Background: Double cycling with breath-stacking (DC/BS) during controlled mechanical ventilation is considered potentially injurious, reflecting a high respiratory drive. During partial ventilatory support, its occurrence might be attributable to physiological variability of breathing patterns, reflecting the response of the mode without carrying specific risks.

Methods: This secondary analysis of a crossover study evaluated DC/BS events in hypoxemic patients resuming spontaneous breathing in cross-over under neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), proportional assist ventilation (PAV +), and pressure support ventilation (PSV).

Background: Early esophageal fistula formation following anterior cervical spine surgery presents a formidable clinical challenge, necessitating astute rehabilitative nursing management. Such fistulas, if not promptly and effectively managed, can precipitate grave complications including mediastinitis, sepsis, respiratory failure, and, in severe instances, mortality. This underscores the critical need for immediate, comprehensive nursing interventions designed to mitigate these risks and enhance patient outcomes.

"INSERT-COIN": A PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF COIN INGESTION IN CHILDREN OF SOUTHERN ITALY.

Am J Gastroenterol

December 2024

Pediatric Clinic, Department of Surgical and Biomedical Sciences, University of Perugia, 06123 Perugia, Italy.

Background And Aims: Coins are the most commonly ingested foreign bodies. When they get stuck in the distal esophagus there is no general agreement about the timing of their removal, since some of them may spontaneously migrate into the stomach, no longer requiring removal. We aimed at evaluating the gastric spontaneous passage of esophageal-retained coins, as well as complications.

Respiratory Physiological Reactions During Expiratory Muscle Training in Patients with Stable Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Physiol Behav

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Object: This study aimed to investigate the physiological responses of patients with severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) during incremental expiratory resistive loading (ERL).

Method: Nine stable subjects with very severe COPD and hypercapnia were recruited. Baseline data were collected through spontaneous breathing for 10 minutes without resistive load.

Managing supraventricular tachyarrhythmia in pregnant patients within the emergency department.

Front Cardiovasc Med

December 2024

Department of Cardiology, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China.
