The Digestive Tumours Registry of Burgundy set up a study to assess acceptability and results of colorectal cancers screening using the Hemoccult test. A total of 95,000 people, aged 45 to 74, were included, 55,000 in 1988 and 40,000 in 1989. The aim of this paper is to report the results of the first screening process in the population tested from January to July 1988, i.e. 27,421 subjects. Information on colorectal cancer was mailed to all homes in the screening areas and a news campaign was organized. During the first 4 months, the general practitioners (GPs) either prescribed the test which was then reimbursed (Autun area), or gave it free to their patients (other areas). After that phase, the test was mailed to all subjects who had not consulted their GP, and a second letter was sent 1 month later when the test had not been sent back. A total of 14,603 subjects performed the Hemoccult test (53.3 percent). Acceptability was higher in those areas there the test was initially given free by the GPs (57.3 percent) than in those where it was prescribed (40.0 percent). Acceptability was higher in women (55.8 percent) than in men (50.6 percent). A total of 57.8 percent of the performed tests were done during the medical offer phase, 29.1 percent after mailing and 13.1 percent after the recall letter. There was a positive test in 340 subjects (2.3 percent) and 288 (84.7 percent) had colonic investigations, a colonoscopy in 99 percent of the cases.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Background: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a severe form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) characterized by damage and inflammation of hepatocytes. Some medicinal plants have shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on liver cells. We aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of Heptex® capsules containing 200 mg of Dukung Anak (a powdered extract from aerial parts of Phyllanthus niruri) and 100 mg of Milk Thistle (a powdered extract from fruits of Silybum marianum) in patients with an apparent risk factor for NASH.

Background: Abortion-related complications are difficult to measure due to lack of standardized definitions and limited available data. We describe the proportion of abortive events that result in a documented complication in Mexico's public sector hospitals.

Methods: We used ICD-10 codes from Mexico's hospital discharge system (2018-2022), Subsistema Automatizado de Egresos Hospitalarios (SAEH), to describe abortive events admitted to hospitals: complications for excessive bleeding, infection, embolism, and unspecified; patient socio-demographic and clinical characteristics; and municipality-level structural vulnerability.

Lung cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in the US. African-American (AA) men are more likely to develop lung cancer with higher incidence and mortality rates than European-American (EA) men. Herein, we report high-confidence alternative splicing (AS) events from high-throughput, high-depth total RNA sequencing of lung tumors and non-tumor adjacent tissues (NATs) in two independent cohorts of patients with adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC).

Automated tools for quantification of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) can aid in ensuring reproducibility, however their complexity and costs can differ substantially. In this retrospective study, two automated tools were compared in 45 patients with biopsy proven (12/45) and imaging-based (33/45) IPF diagnosis (mean age 74 ± 9 years, 37 male) for quantification of pulmonary fibrosis in CT. First, a tool that identifies multiple characteristic lung texture features was applied to measure multi-texture fibrotic lung (MTFL) by combining the amount of ground glass, reticulation, and honeycombing.

Due to the high cost of raw materials, this work aims to benefit from metal waste, especially iron (Fe) and silicon bronze, which results from turning workshops and recycling them to obtain nanocomposites for industrial applications. In this respect, Fe/SiBr/SiN/silica fume nanocomposites possessing superior mechanical, wear, and magnetic characteristics have been produced using powder metallurgy (PM) technology. Milled sample particle size, crystal size, and phase composition were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
