A series of mono-and dinuclear silver(I) and mononuclear gold(I) complexes containing bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) (NHC) or N-functionalized NHC ligands were synthesized and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and, in some cases, by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The in vitro antiplasmodial and antifungal activities of a previously described family of N-functionalized bis(imidazolium) proligands and their corresponding silver(I), gold(I) and gold(III) complexes but also the new here described compounds were investigated in a chloroquine-resistant strain of Plasmodium falciparum, and against two Candida strains, respectively. For the first family, interesting antiplasmodial and antifungal activities were found for the dinuclear silver(I) species but they also showed strong hemolytic properties. Pharmaco-modulations leading to the second series of complexes allowed notably increase in the antiplasmodial activity, in particular of the mononuclear gold(I) complexes with IC(50) values up to 330 nM, without any hemolysis.

Alkynylallenes offer the varied reactivity patterns of two different multiple bond linkages either separately or in concert. Initially, a short overview of their syntheses, structures, rearrangement mechanisms and synthetic utility, especially when treated with transition metal reagents such as gold(I), silver(I), platinum metals or metal carbonyls, is presented. Subsequently, we focus on the particular case of 1,2-dien-5-ynes (propargylallenes), whereby the shortness of the single atom bridge, and the consequent proximity of the allenyl and alkynyl moieties, facilitates metal-mediated interactions between them.

Leishmaniasis is a group of parasitic diseases with the potential to infect more than 1 billion people; however, its treatment is still old and inadequate. In order to contribute to changing this view, this work consisted of the development of complexes derived from M metal ions with thioureas, aiming to obtain potential leishmanicidal agents. Phenanthroline-based ligands with bulky aryl groups flanking the metal binding pocket enabled the synthesis and detailed investigation of ethylene complexes of copper(I), silver(I), and gold(I), including structural data of [{2,9-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline}M(CH)][SbF] (M = Cu, Ag, Au), Additionally, a related copper(I)-ethylene complex with a highly fluorinated ligand is also reported. Gold(I) affects the ethylene moiety significantly as evident from the notable upfield coordination shifts of ethylene carbon signals in the NMR and lengthening of the ethylene CC bond length. Silver(I) forms the weakest bond with ethylene in this series of isoleptic, group 11 metal-ethylene complexes.
