A putative underdiagnosis of clinical chikungunya virus infection in Dutch travelers to the Indian Ocean area was addressed by retrospective screening of all sera for which requested dengue virus serology was negative in the period 2007 to 2010. Evidence for a recent infection was observed in 6.5% of 107 patients, indicating a substantial underdiagnosis and the need for increased awareness among physicians.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that is primarily known for causing severe joint and muscle symptoms, but its pathological effects have extended beyond these tissues. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive proteomic analysis across various organs in rodent and nonhuman primate models to investigate CHIKV's impact on organs beyond joints and muscles and to identify key host factors involved in its pathogenesis. Our findings reveal significant species-specific similarities and differences in immune responses and metabolic regulation, with proteins like Interferon-Stimulated Gene 15 (ISG15) and Retinoic Acid-Inducible Gene I (RIG-I) playing crucial roles in the anti-CHIKV defense.

Design of Natterins-based peptides improves antimicrobial and antiviral activities.

Biotechnol Rep (Amst)

March 2025

Laboratory of Peptide Biochemistry, Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São José dos Campos, Brazil.

The biochemical analysis of animal venoms has been intensifying over the years, enabling the prediction of new molecules derived from toxins, harnessing the therapeutic potential of these molecules. From the venom of the fish , using methods for predicting antimicrobial and cell-penetrating peptides, two peptides from Natterins with promising characteristics were synthesized and subjected to and analysis. The peptides were subjected to stability tests and antimicrobial assays, cytotoxicity in murine fibroblast cells, antiviral assays against the Chikungunya virus, and the toxicity on was also evaluated.

The Current Progress in the Quest for Vaccines Against the Semliki Forest Virus Complex.

Med Res Rev

January 2025

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Infectious Disease Translational Research Programme, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore City, Singapore.

The Semliki Forest virus (SFV) complex comprises of arboviruses that are transmitted by arthropod vectors and cause acute febrile illness in humans. In the last seven decades, re-emergence of these viruses has resulted in numerous outbreaks globally, affecting regions including Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. These viruses are transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes.

Recent advances in phytocompounds as potential Chikungunya virus non-structural protein 2 protease antagonists: A systematic review.

Phytomedicine

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Laboratory, PG Department of Botany, Berhampur University, Berhampur, Odisha, 760007, India. Electronic address:

Background: The mosquito-borne pathogenic alphavirus known as Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is becoming a greater hazard to public health, which causes thousands of cases annually in both rural and urban areas of many different nations throughout the world. Finding and creating new leads for the CHIKV virus is crucial because there are currently no effective medications or vaccinations against it. The non-structural protein 2 (nsP2) protease has emerged as a promising target for therapeutic intervention due to its crucial role in viral replication.
