Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the feasibility of an online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program for patients recovering from extremity fractures compared to usual care.
  • Despite enrolling 94 participants, recruitment showed a "yellow light," indicating some success but needing improvements.
  • Compliance with the CBT program was low, as only 60% completed all modules, leading to a "red light," suggesting significant changes are necessary before a larger trial can proceed.

Background: Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) surgery for correction of idiopathic scoliosis is associated with chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP). In this multicenter study, we describe perioperative multimodal analgesic (MMA) management and characterize postoperative pain, disability, and quality of life over 12 months after PSF in adolescents and young adults.

Methods: Subjects (8-25 years) undergoing PSF were recruited at 6 sites in the United States between 2016 and 2023.

Background Managing primary bone and soft tissue sarcomas in pediatric patients poses significant challenges, with surgical resection remaining essential for cure. While limb salvage surgery has emerged as the standard approach, concerns persist regarding post-operative complications. Our study aims to evaluate the 30-day morbidity and mortality of limb salvage surgery in pediatric tumor patients, bridging critical knowledge gaps and contributing to enhancing the standard of care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the safety and efficacy of percutaneous drain placement for postoperative fluid collections in the breast.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of the patient characteristics, intervention data, and clinical outcomes of the 43 adult patients who underwent percutaneous drain placement for fluid collections at a tertiary care hospital over a 13-year period ending February 28, 2023.

Results: Most fluid collections treated with percutaneous drain placement were secondary to ipsilateral breast surgery (92%, 44/48), most commonly breast reduction (23%, 10/44) and mastectomy with immediate tissue expander reconstruction (16%, 7/44).

Background: Caesarean section (CS) is the most common inpatient surgical procedure performed in Canada. CS is known to cause moderate-to-severe pain, which is suggested to be associated with postpartum depression and persistent pain. Existing limitations in multimodal analgesia and conscious attempts to avoid opioids highlight the need for non-pharmacological strategies.
